Job description
University Studies (UNST) is the award winning, nationally-recognized, integrated, interdisciplinary general education program for Portland State University. UNST is guided by its vision, “challenging us to think holistically, care deeply, and engage courageously in imagining and co-creating a just world.” To that end, the program emphasizes reflective practice and student-centered learning in a caring community. University Studies collaborates widely across academic units at Portland State University, working with 40 academic departments and programs to deliver over 300 UNST-specific courses per term.
The program consists of four levels each with its own organizational structure: Freshman Inquiry (Senior Inquiry in Portland Area High Schools), Sophomore Inquiry, Junior Clusters, and Senior Capstones.
Portland State’s 49-acre downtown campus is located in the heart of one of America’s most vibrant centers of culture, business and technology. We are recognized throughout the world for programs like Urban Planning, Social Work, and Environmental Studies that directly engage the community, and aim our students towards the creation of a better, more sustainable world.
Senior Inquiry is a high school version of University Studies Freshman Inquiry that is a dual-credit course taught in a high school within the Portland Metro Area and Senior inquiry faculty work in teams of three (2 high school counterparts). Faculty are responsible for actively mentoring and collaborating with their teams to design a scaffolded curriculum that supports student success. In addition to their inquiry focus and interdisciplinary scope, University Studies courses are writing intensive.
With Senior Inquiry students receive 15 credits for successful completion of the year-long, thematic, cohort-based, capstone seminar where students form learning communities to engage in collaborative assignments, experiential and community-based learning, undergraduate research, and the development of learning portfolios. Upon completion, students will have earned four credits each of 100-level Social Science, Arts & Humanities, and Natural Science as well as 3 credits of Writing 121.
Faculty teaching a Senior Inquiry course will have an earlier start date, which is dependent on the school district for which they are teaching.
