Hygiene
  • Bed baths, showers, general bathing as required.
  • Cleaning, washing, brushing of hair.
  • Cleaning of finger/toenails.
  • Accompany patients to toilets, bathrooms. Remain and assist in patient bathing/toileting.
  • Supervise patients on commodes and assist with hygiene needs.
  • Give out urinals, bedpans, commodes and washbasins as required.
  • Assisting as required with bowel and stoma function.
  • Measuring urinary output and notifying RN.
  • Assisting the RN promote continence care, as required.
  • Shave patients pre-operatively as required.
  • When required facial shaving of male patients.
  • Dental care and oral hygiene.
  • Assist patients with dressing and undressing ensuring all clothing is clean and comfortable avoid tight clothing.
  • At all times be aware of the need to follow Health Board and hospital practices in relation to infection control, Health and Safety policies.
Nutrition
  • Help and support patients during meal times. Assist in the feeding of patients as required under the supervision of RN.
  • Ensure individual patients dietary needs are adhered to including special diets and supplementary drinks under the direction of the RN.
  • Assist patients to complete menu cards where necessary.

Mobilisation

  • Reposition patients in chairs and beds and ensure their comfort and safety.
  • Assist patients with walking.
  • Transfer patients from bed to chair and chair to bed safely.

Accompany and assist nursing staff in the transfer of patients to other areas within the hospital and outside the hospital as required including pushing and or pulling of beds, · trolleys, wheelchairs and any other mobile equipment as directed by the CNM / RN.

General Daily Duties

  • Stripping, cleaning, washing and making of occupied and occupied beds/cots under the supervision of RN.
  • Cleaning of trolleys, lockers/bed tables as required.
  • Cleaning of equipment in accordance with hospital policy and as directed by the CNM2/CNM1 or RN.
  • Sorting, checking and disposing of soiled linen and clinical waste in accordance with hospital policy and infection control policy.
  • Moving of beds/cots, lockers and furniture and transferring within and between wards when required.
  • Collection / delivery of supplies, equipment when required.
  • Clean spillages immediately and make safe the area according to hospital policy.
  • In relation to Health & Safety, be aware of your own safety and that of your colleagues and others.
  • Assist with patient escort duties as assigned by the CNM2/CNM1 or RN.
  • Be professional at all times and be courteous and friendly to all patients, visitors and colleagues.
  • Replace and distribute sputum and denture cartons as required to patients.
  • Refill / replace water jugs and glasses for patients as required.
  • Prepare and serve food and drinks outside of normal catering hours.
  • Washing of crockery and cleaning of kitchen as necessary.
  • Assist with confused or agitated patients following assessment by RN.
  • Assist with the Last Offices and preparation of the deceased for the transfer to the mortuary.
  • Offer beverages to relatives if required at the discretion of RN.
  • Assist in the storage of C.S.S.D. and stores.
  • Ensure sluice room is clean and tidy at all times.
  • Ensure linen cupboards and linen trolleys are kept tidy and stocked.
  • Answer phones-referring enquiries in relation to patients to RN.
  • Assist in weighing patients if necessary.
  • Prepare bed area for admission of patient under the supervision of RN
  • Itemise patient property and clothing on admission in accordance with hospital policy.
  • Assist paramedical staff as required under the direction of the CNM2/CNM1 or RN.
  • Ensure all headphones for the radio TV are cleaned according to hospital policy.
  • Answers call bells and seek assistance as appropriate.
  • Report any broken items/ equipment in need of repair to CNM / RN.
  • Orientate new patients to the ward and hospital environment especially informing them of location of toilets/bathrooms, lifts, telephones etc.
  • Follow the hospital guidelines in relation to the wearing of appropriate uniform. Always present at work at either ward/department level in a clean, tidy manner having regard to the highest standard of attire and personal hygiene in line with hospital uniform policy.
  • Perform any other appropriate duties as designated by the CNM’s / RN.
  • Work in any department/or area as may be required.

Each member of staff is required to:

  • Be familiar and comply with Board, Hospital and Ward policies in relation to the following:
  • Health & Safety.
  • Infection Control including disposal of waste sharps and infected linen.
  • Incident and Accident reporting.
  • Hospital Risk Management
  • Complaints procedure
  • Uniform Policy
  • Managing Attendance Policy and
  • Any other relevant policies appropriate to your area of work.
  • Attend mandatory in service education on the following:
  • Handling and Lifting

· Cardio-pulmonary resuscitation· Fire Drill

  • Sharps awareness/Health Safety
  • Infection Control
  • Control and Restraint and Breakaway Techniques Training
  • Haemovigilance and policy on collecting blood from Laboratory.
  • Any other training appropriate to the post.
  • The holder of the post is expected to successfully undergo a formal training programme consisting of tutorials and ward based practice.
  • The Health Care Assistant will report on duty and off duty from each shift to the CNM’s / Registered Nurse in Charge.
