Full – Time Telecommunicator
The West Suburban Consolidated Dispatch Center (WSCDC) is currently accepting applications for the position of full-time Telecommunicator. WSCDC is a primary PSAP and answers calls and dispatches Police, Fire and EMS for the Villages of Forest Park, Oak Park, and River Forest.
Applicants must be able to type a minimum of 35 words-per-minute, successfully pass a written examination, criminal background check, drug and alcohol screenings, hearing tests, psychological tests, and be able to obtain full-access LEADS and Emergency Medical Dispatch certification. Employees must reside within the Illinois counties of Cook, DuPage, McHenry, Lake, Kane, Kendall, LaSalle and Will.
Full-time Telecommunicators work 12-hour shifts with rotating days off (0630-1830 or 1830-0630). While in training, it may be necessary to switch shifts periodically until permanent assignment is made when training is complete.
Telecommunicator salary range is $52,120 – $76,471 after completion of 6 years. WSCDC offers HMO or PPO medical plans, medical flexible spending, dental and eye insurance, life insurance, IMRF, and ICMA (457).

TELECOMMUNICATOR
DEFINITION
Performs work of moderate difficulty while receiving calls for police, fire and emergency medical services via the emergency 9-1-1 system, radio, alarm circuitry and other telephone lines.
SUPERVISION RECEIVED AND EXERCISED
Receives general supervision
All voice and data entry work continually recorded and constantly subject to live monitoring or later review and critique, including possible public disclosure of such work and performs other related duties as assigned.
EXAMPLES OF DUTIES – Duties and responsibilities may include, but are not limited to, the following:
1. Answers emergency and non-emergency calls for service; enters this information into the computer using a typewriter-style keyboard and the Computer Aided Dispatch (CAD) system.
2. Calms, negotiates, advises callers who may be injured, confused or abusive and otherwise communicates to obtain needed and accurate information.
3. Determines the nature of the call and assigns it's priority using codes and dispatches by radio and
CAD.
4. Provides medical pre-arrival instructions in life threatening situations.
5. Updates information as it's received and enters it into the computer to maintain current status of manpower and equipment.
6. Handles more than one call at a time.
7. Works with outside local, state and federal agencies.
8. Handles emergency communications during regional disasters for multiple agencies.
9. Continually monitors numerous radio frequencies.
10. Activates area-wide emergency alerting sirens in case of tornado, severe weather or national defense.
11. Answers non-emergency calls and provides requested information.
12. Retrieves needed information on driver's licenses, vehicle registrations, warrants, etc. by computer into other local, state and federal computer information systems.
13. Works rotating shifts in a 24-hour environment.
14. Performs other duties as may be assigned by the Lead telecommunicator, Supervisor or Director.
15. Testifies in court concerning operations or procedures.
16. Performs related duties and responsibilities as required.
QUALIFICATIONS
Training and Experience: High school graduate or equivalent. Have experience in one or more of the following: on-line CRT data entry, telephone operator work on multi-line phone equipment, live
(interactive) complaint or problem resolution, interactive service oriented public contact work involving recording orders, managing multiple contacts or orders simultaneously.
Knowledge, Skills and Abilities: Must be able to type accurately under conditions of multiple distractions; working skill in operating a computer keyboard. Must speak and write English understandably. Working ability to remember numerous details and quickly recall essential information; working ability to think clearly and act quickly in emergency situations; working ability to gather, organize, translate and process information from various sources; working ability to draw reasonable and logical conclusions from information which is dissimilar; working ability to deal with people in highly stressful situations; working ability to record names and addresses rapidly and accurately; working ability to exercise effective interpersonal skills; working ability to hear and understand two messages transmitted simultaneously; working ability to read and discern visual images on a variety of media; working ability to function in an environment in the presence of multiple simultaneous sounds and visual sources; some ability to read and understand maps; working ability to work continuously wearing a communications headset that will cover one ear or fit within one ear and be able to still hear and understand other outside sound sources.
