Position Summary/Purpose of Position:
The Academic Advisor will provide academic advising for students applying to and admitted to the undergraduate Psychology major. Advising duties include academic and career counseling in one-on-one, group and online settings. Teaching responsibilities involve both in-class and online courses, including experiential learning and independent study in psychology and first year and advanced-student seminars for psychology majors. Advisors may be asked to develop new courses, curricula and learning assessments to enhance and evaluate student learning and integrate new technology-based learning tools. Administrative duties include scheduling, managing projects, planning undergraduate program events and commencement ceremonies, leading new student orientations for prospective, incoming and transfer students, and conducting academic audits for entrance to the major, gateway requirements and graduation clearance. Occasional evening and weekend hours may be required.

Minimum Qualifications:
Education:
Bachelor’s degree required.

Experience:
At least 2 years professional experience advising students in a higher education environment is required.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:
  • Exceptional oral and written communication skills.
  • Demonstrated excellence in developing and maintaining supportive relationships with students, coworkers, administrators, and faculty members.

Preferences:
Preferences:
  • Special consideration will be given to candidates with a master’s degree in psychology or a related discipline and experience with the academic requirements and administrative policies of the University of Maryland, the College of Behavioral and Social Sciences and the Department of Psychology.
  • Experience in higher education advising, or counseling.
  • Teaching experience with student evaluations that demonstrate a dedication to student learning and evidence-based pedagogy.
  • Ability to act as an advocate for students and the University.
  • Ability to encourage and empower undergraduate students.
  • Knowledge of academic policies and procedures in a higher education setting.
  • Knowledge and understanding of higher education, student development and academic advising.
  • Ability to communicate effectively and work effectively as a member of the advising team.
  • Familiarity with advising software (Advise on the Web, SIS, U-Achieve, etc.).
  • Strong attention to detail, organizational and multitasking skills are essential.
  • Sensitivity to the needs of a diverse student population.
  • Proficient in Microsoft Office applications.

The physical demands described here are representative of those that must be met by an employee to successfully perform the essential functions of this job.
  • This position is an administrative position. Work is primarily performed in an office environment within the 8:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. time frame with some evening and weekend hours. This position requires the ability to operate standard office equipment and keyboards. Extensive viewing of a computer screen is normal.
  • This position will frequently exchange information through vocal and written communication, with individuals of various ages, socio-economic, and educational backgrounds.
  • The worker is required to have close visual acuity to perform an activity such as: exam grading, viewing a computer terminal; extensive reading.
  • Ability to lift and carry small parcels, packages, and other items (up to 10 lbs.) between offices.
