The Accounting Assistant performs bookkeeping and administrative duties such as: data entry, processing and recording of transactions, and updating the general ledger. They will assist with the preparation of financial statements pertaining to the audit and monthly review and prepare reports and complex spreadsheets as requested by the Accounting Manager(s). The Accounting Assistant will serve as back-up for payroll processing, perform bank reconciliations and will also be crossed trained to serve as back-up for Accounts Payable and Receivable when circumstances dictate. The Accounting Assistant will assist managing the financial and accounting software used by Cranbrook.

Responsibilities include, but are not limited to:

  • Provide assistance to the Accounting Manager(s) which may include reconciliation of general ledger accounts, preparation of journal entries, working with complex spreadsheets (i.e.; 990 Tax Return preparation, ACH Accounts Payable, Payroll Reports/Spreadsheets, statement of activities), and the reconciliation of the general bank account.
  • Gather and compile routine reports and summaries.
  • Assist Accounting Manager(s) with ongoing training and procedural changes.
  • Update and maintain procedural documentation.
  • Assist in managing the financial and accounting software used by Cranbrook.
  • Provide backup for Payroll, Accounts Payable, and Accounts Receivable.
  • Maintain strict confidentiality on all payroll-related issues, files, information, and paperwork inherent to this function.

Requirements:

  • High School diploma or GED required, an Associate’s degree in business, accounting or a related field preferred.
  • Five years of experience in Accounting required.
  • Thorough knowledge of finance tools such as spreadsheets and accounting software is essential. Must have strong computer skills in Microsoft Excel in order to create complex spreadsheets.
  • Proven proficiency at effective prioritization and multitasking.
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills required.
