The Opportunity

The Administrative and Graduate Programs Assistant in MSE is responsible for the administration, organization, and management of multiple activities within the department as well as being the first person of contact for faculty, students, and visitors. Regular administrative tasks include (but are not limited to) receptionist for the front office, scheduling meetings, managing mail and package services, stocking office supplies, processing travel requests, coordinating a variety of events and activities for the graduate program, serving as an informational resource for a variety of stakeholders and providing general administrative support for the graduate programs. In addition, this position coordinates the logistical aspects of the department’s academic year seminar series. This position may also provide support to additional faculty members and administrative staff.
Required Qualifications
- Formal training beyond a HS Diploma of 1 to 2 years, 2 years of coursework, or an Associates Degree.
- At least 2 years of administrative experience.
- Demonstrated commitment to supporting diversity, equity, access, inclusion, and wellbeing.
- Capacity to cultivate and develop inclusive and equitable working relationships with students, faculty, staff and community members
- Excellent customer service skills and demonstrated ability to serve and communicate with a broad range of people.
- Highly adept of working with office computer systems and software such as Word, Excel, Outlook, and Box.
- Interest and aptitude to learn new systems, including e-shop, submitting I-WNT documents.
- Aptitude to work independently while supporting the efforts of an overall team.
- Attention to detail, time management, and organizational skills are critical.
- Aptitude to take ownership, meet deadlines, initiate prompt action, and complete projects in a timely fashion.
- Excellent oral and written communication.
Employees are expected to meet all of the Cornell University Staff Skills for Success, which are essential for individual and organizational success.
Employees may be required to work outside of normal business hours during special events.
This position is located in Ithaca, New York and will provide hybrid work flexibility.
