Position Summary

The Administrative Support Coordinator-Mathematics and Computer Science performs the supportive role of an administrative assistant between and among these various areas; is the primary receptionist for both departments and is responsible for organizing and overseeing department events. The Administrative Support Coordinator maintains and updates the department website and provides support for the department chairs and other professional staff members of the departments.

Under supervision of the Department Chair, the Administrative Support Coordinator ensures efficient workflow in support of the academic and research programs of the departments. The incumbent will serve as a supporting resource for the departments and University. As such, they are expected to provide accurate and up-to-date information to inquiries and assure efficient professional completion of position duties.

This is a full-time (1.0 time-base), benefits eligible, permanent/probationary position. This position is designated non-exempt under FLSA and is eligible for overtime compensation. Standard SDSU work hours are Monday – Friday, 8:00 a.m. to 4:30 p.m., but may vary based on operational needs.

The individual hired into this role will work on campus at SDSU in San Diego.


Department Summary

The Department of Mathematics and Statistics is one of the largest departmental units on the campus of San Diego State University.

Within the Department of Mathematics and Statistics there are three distinct divisions, each of which, in many universities, is a completely separate departmental unit. They are Mathematics Applications, Mathematics Education, and Statistics. In this department these Divisions have their own coordinators and degrees, both at the bachelor's and the master's level. The Mathematics Education Division offers work and direction leading to a Secondary Credential in Mathematics and a Ph.D. The Statistics Division runs a Statistics Consulting Center and a PhD program in Computational Statistics.

Education and Experience

Entry to this classification requires a fully functional knowledge of and skill in standard office procedures and practices, as well as an ability to understand and operate in a variety of organizational structures. Additionally, incumbents are expected to have a thorough knowledge of English grammar, spelling, and punctuation and be able to clearly communicate orally and in writing. Some positions may require a knowledge of business mathematics beyond basic arithmetic. The ability to use and quickly learn new office support technology systems and software packages is also a prerequisite.

These entry qualifications would normally be obtained through a high school program, technical/vocational program, or their equivalents combined with several years of related office work experience.

Compensation and Benefits

Starting salary upon appointment is not expected to exceed $3,675 per month.

Salary placement is determined by the education, experience, and qualifications the candidate brings to the position, internal equity, and the hiring department’s fiscal resources.
