JOB TITLE: Adult Services Associate PAY LEVEL: 4

IMMEDIATE SUPERVISOR: Manager, Adult Services
SUMMARY STATEMENT: The Adult Services Associate will work primarily at the public service desk and
will also be assigned work to aid professional staff with day-to-day operations as well as other projects.
DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
Patron Assistance:
- Assist patrons of all ages in a positive, timely, and efficient manner.
- Perform readers’ advisory services for patrons.
- Assist patrons in answering questions and locating resources through a variety of print and electronic
- Assist patrons of all ages in using the public computers, including basic instruction and
- Assist patrons with the basic use of available Internet resources and computer software programs.
- Place hold requests, check status of patrons’ library accounts and answer account-related queries.
- Assist patrons in using the library catalog, electronic resources, and other library resources.
- Assist and train patrons in using all currently available Adult Services equipment, including but not

- May act as Person in Charge, responsible for enforcing the library’s policies and rules of conduct on a

Additional Responsibilities
- Assist with day-to-day operations of the Adult Services Department.
- May participate in weeding and collection development under the direction of the Adult Services
- Provide training for staff in library and departmental procedures as needed.
- May assist professional staff in developing resources to promote fiction and nonfiction collections.
- May plan library programming under the direction of the Adult Services Manager.
- Participate in the library outreach events.
- Attend workshops and meetings which promote library enrichment and services.
- Attend departmental meetings.
- Participate in various internal committees and teams in an effort to better serve patrons.
- Other duties as assigned.
- Track and report relevant monthly department statistics.
- Monitor department equipment operation, maintain and order supplies, and make sure equipment
- Handle departmental correspondence as required.
- Bachelors or L.T.A. Certificate from an accredited college.
- Ability to conduct a reference interview.
- Ability to perform readers’ advisory.
- Knowledge of electronic and non-electronic reference materials.
- Ability to use and explain the use of catalogs, guides, and other library resources to individuals and

WORKING CONDITIONS AND PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS:
Work is performed in a public library setting with minimal exposure to health or safety hazards.
Substantial time is spent working on a computer. This work typically requires the following physical
activities: sitting, walking, bending, stooping, reaching above shoulder height, finger dexterity, repetitive
motions, talking, hearing and visual acuity. May have to lift files, supplies, furniture or fixtures on
occasion. The physical demands described here are representative of those that must be met by an
employee to successfully perform the essential functions of this job. Reasonable accommodations may
