Position Title: Animal Care Manager

Classification: Full-time, Non-Exempt

Reports To: Executive Director

Work Hours: Typically, 40-hours (full-time).

Southeast Volusia Humane Society is looking for a dynamic leader who handles the day-to-day operations of animal care. This is a fantastic opportunity for an animal lover who has excellent management, computer, and communication skills. The candidate must coach and manage a team of cat and dog caretakers and manage the health and well-being of the animals in our care from intake through to adoption. They must be able to perform behavior evaluations, give vaccines, perform heartworm tests, perform behavior modification, and match pets with their new adopters. The animal care manager handles the day-to-day operations of the department and must be great with people. The ability to multitask is a must, and creative problem-solving skills are encouraged. We are looking for someone who wants to contribute positively to our team, save animals lives, and has a great work-ethic.

Essential Duties and Functions

  • Performs and assists with animals’ initial animal admission examinations and initial behavior evaluations.
  • Creates and maintain animal admission reports verifying data entry, animal identification and processing are correctly recorded in PetPoint as well as displayed with and on the animals.
  • Maintains accuracy of drug logs.
  • Hire staff, train staff, evaluate staff, give constructive feedback, perform disciplinary actions if needed.
  • Responsible for scheduling staff.
  • Provide quality customer service to clients, fosters, volunteers, and co-workers while actively promoting the Society’s mission, services, programs, and events.
  • Answer telephone calls promptly and courteously, providing accurate information.
  • Model and encourage the humane treatment of animals.
  • Promote donation and giving opportunities as appropriate.
  • Assist clients with animal admission processes.
  • Maintains or learn PetPoint admission, outcome, and medical care, and transfer functions.
  • Maintain and verify data entry, animal identification and processing in PetPoint as well as on the kennel cards displayed that are kept with the animals.
  • Performs and maintains the preparation, paperwork and data entry for the transfer and foster programs.
  • Is knowledgeable of all office equipment and how to maintain its proper use.
  • Ensure workstations are kept clean, orderly, and maintained daily.
  • Follow established disease control protocols to clean, disinfect, and maintain shelter and general areas.
  • Enforce the established disease control, behavior assessments, and training protocols.
  • Report animal health or behavior abnormalities to Dog or Cat Manager and Executive Director.
  • Participate in stress and disease reduction efforts throughout the shelter environment, including enrichment.
  • Maintain proper inventory levels of shelter supplies and reorders when necessary.
  • Represent the Society in a positive manner by professional personal appearance.
  • Ensure a safe work environment, following all safety guidelines, including PPE, and modeling safe work practice.
  • Take immediate action to address any safety concerns that could put a staff member, volunteer, client, animal, or the organization at risk.
  • Attend and participate in departmental and shelter meetings. Attend educational venues as recommended/approved.
  • Willing and cooperatively performs other duties as assigned by proper authority, that may not be in specific job description.
  • Is flexible with scheduling and is available when away from the facility as needed to meet the needs of the organization.
  • Maintain excellent knowledge of all shelter standard medical procedures, vaccines, preventatives, and common diseases and their symptoms, transmission, and prevention.
  • Ensure medical treatment sheets are being completed and signed off. Ensure all staff are following intake and medical protocols.
  • Perform all intakes including strays and owner surrenders. Consult with the other managers about what we can and cannot take and for immediate medical decisions on euthanasia. Make those decisions when necessary.
  • Performs animal euthanasia when necessary, following all SEVHS policy and procedures to ensure compassionate, effective, and humane death.
  • Arrive to work on time and work the entire shift.

Required Qualifications

To perform this job successfully, an individual must be able to perform each essential duty in a satisfactory manner.   • High school diploma or equivalent. Prefer the completion of a two- or four-year accredited college or university with computer training or experience.
  • Any acceptable combination of education, training and/or experience in animal welfare and/or customer service helpful.
  • Available to work weekends, holiday shifts and overtime as needed.
  • Must possess a valid and unrestricted Florida driver’s license with a clean DMV record for the past 3 years.
  • Must be obtain their euthanasia certification within 6 months of hire.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

  • Ability to learn various breed identifications of dogs, cats, other domestic and wild animals.
  • This position requires an individual who can cope with the stress of euthanasia.
  • Ability to obtain Florida Euthanasia Certification.
  • Highly motivated, polite, and act in a professional manner.
  • Team player, able to work in a fast-paced environment and multi-task.
  • The ability to deal with a diverse public on the telephone and in person is required.
  • Communicate effectively orally and in writing.
  • The ability to work compassionately with animals that may be fractious and possibly attempt to bite or scratch.
  • Must have or develop a firm understanding of humane issues and the policies of the Society with the ability to clearly present this information to the public.
  • Excellent organizational skills: ability to prioritize and meet deadlines.
  • Computer skills in a Windows environment preferred including Word, Excel, Power Point and PetPoint.

Mental Demands

Must have the ability to multitask, prioritize and handle high levels of stress. Position requires excellent organizational skills, as well as high level of accuracy and attention to detail. Must be dependable, have proven ability to meet deadlines and follow detailed instructions without need of constant support.

Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, distance vision, peripheral vision, depth perception and ability to adjust focus.
