Hiring Salary: $40,973 Depending on Qualifications
Under general supervision, performs skilled law enforcement work for the County in the enforcement of all state and local ordinances related to control of animals and operation of an animal shelter. Employee must exercise independent judgment and initiative in ensuring proper care for animals; exercise tact, courtesy and firmness in frequent contact with animal owners and general public and be able to perform monthly on-call duty assignments.
Reports to Chief Animal Control Officer.
Example of Duties
- Patrols the County, monitors radio calls, and inspects troublesome areas; picks up animals that are in violation and impounds animals at County Animal Shelter according to local and state laws; ensure proper confinement of animals in accordance with the law.
- Sets traps or by other means captures and confines stray, diseased or dangerous animals, including domestic, wild animals, livestock, and fowl.
- Euthanizes vicious, injured, or diseased and unclaimed animals utilizing humane methods; decapitates animals that are suspected to have rabies or have died in confinement.
- Investigates cases of animal bites, cruelty to animals, abandonment, rabies, stolen dogs, shooting of animals, and livestock and poultry kills; writes summons; search warrants; prepare court reports; and appears and testifies in court.
- Maintains files and records on dog licenses, lost dogs, animals housed at the County Animal Shelter, and adoptions.
- Officer may be responsible for or assist in the daily operation of the animal shelter, training operations, property book, or other additional duties as assigned.

Qualifications
- Possession of a high school diploma/GED.
- Minimum of two (2) years of related training and/or work experience.

Must be a minimum of 21 years of age.

Possession of a valid driver’s license; possess and maintain a driving record that meets established Gloucester County Driving Standards.

Pass a pre-employment, post-offer physical examination; employee is subject to subsequent physical examinations to ensure he/she meets job-related physical requirements.

If hired, completion of the Police Academy Animal Control Training School is required.

Certify and annually renew firearms handling certification, Aerosol Weapons Oleoresin Capsicum (OC- Pepper Spray) and Expandable Baton (ASP) training courses.
