Position General Description:
The Assistant to Laboratory Coordinator is responsible for the installation, optimal operation, troubleshooting, repair, and maintenance of laboratory equipment to allow students to complete their assigned tasks successfully and in a safe environment. It is also responsible for the security of the equipment and instrumentation as well as for the implementation of safety according to the pertinent regulations. It will also support the laboratory by helping in the development of new laboratory experiences, obtaining quotations of equipment and supplies, preparing reports, and maintaining current the inventory. The Assistant to Laboratory Coordinator is a bilingual individual who performs a full range of laboratory tasks, from the most routine to the most complex, with little or no supervision.
General Functions:
- Work in the Measurements, Mechatronics, and CAD/CAM/CAE, MEASUREMENTS, ROBOTICS AND INDUSTRIAL AUTOMATION, FLUID MECHANICS laboratories, and where electrical, electronic, and hardware and software interfacing is commonplace.
- Responsible for the installation of equipment and laboratory setup.
- Responsible for setting up the laboratory in compliance with established safety regulations such as OSHA, OSHO, and EPA.
- Responsible for the optimal operation of the laboratory equipment. Perform routine calibrations and quality control activities.
- Perform the troubleshooting, maintenance, and repair of machinery and electronic instrumentation.
- Perform the maintenance of computer hardware and network systems.
- Install software, perform configurations, and administer systems in Windows, Unix, and Linux operating systems.
- Ensure in a daily basis that all installed software in the computers is working in perfect conditions.
- Design and build digital and analog circuitry for controlling or monitoring electronic actuators and sensors.
- Design and build hydraulic and pneumatic systems for controlling or monitoring actuators and sensors.
- Design and build robotic machines for classroom instruction and competitions.
- Design, build, and perform the programming of systems controlled by Programmable Logic Controllers (PLC).
- Design and build devices in support to Data Acquisition (DAQ) Systems.
- Perform installation, maintenance, and repair of milling and lathe CNC machines.
- Design and manufacture components using CNC.
- Develop interfaces using Lab view software for a variety of laboratory applications.
- Request quotations and prepare purchase orders for the acquisition of equipment, instruments, and materials.
- Responsible for controlling and maintaining an inventory of laboratory supplies and materials; placing orders and picking them up, as needed.
- Responsible for controlling and maintaining an inventory of laboratory equipment and instrumentation manuals.
- Responsible for the conception and maintenance of the Laboratory Maintenance Manual.
- Assist in the maintenance of the Laboratory Development Manual.
- Assist in the development of laboratory experiments and laboratory manuals.
- Provide instruction to staff and students in the use of laboratory equipment.
- Request, coordinate, and follow up needed services to other departments or offices and external providers.
- Design and maintain a webpage for the department and its units.
- Provide support to students in the development of special projects.
- Provide electrical-electronic technical support to other laboratories of the Mechanical Engineering Department.
- Help providing solutions to optimize the laboratories and support equipment operation.
- Responsible for the safekeeping of the instrumentation and equipment in the laboratories.
Other Responsibilities:
- Keep the laboratories in neat conditions.
- Perform an annual inventory of laboratory equipment, accessories, tools, supplies, materials, and furniture.
- Keep an inventory of equipment manuals, purchase orders, warranties, quotations, etc.
- Follow-up the maintenance of equipment and coordinate the necessary services from other departments, offices, or external service providers.
- Actively participate and collaborate in the design and setting of displays for accreditation visits, open houses, laboratory tours, and other promotional active Perform other related duties as assigned.
Minimal Requirements of the Position
Education:
- Bachelor’s degree in mechanical or electrical Engineering from an accredited institution or associate degree in mechanical, Electrical Engineering or related field from an accredited Institution.
Experience:
- Professional maturity and experience of at least one year in a similar position.
- Experience in maintenance of mechanical, electrical, and electronic equipment in a laboratory or industry setting and knowledge of OSHA and EPA regulations.
- Working knowledge of PLC’s, robotics, microprocessors, data acquisition boards, measurement instrumentation, analog and digital instrumentation and equipment, and troubleshooting of electric, electronic, and mechanical equipment.
- Experience in the maintenance of computer hardware and network systems.
- Experience in software installation, configuration, and administration of systems in Windows, Unix, and Linux operating systems.
- Skillful in AutoCad, Pro/E, Pro/Mechanica, CNC programming and machining, and PLC and Labview programming.
- Experience in webpage development and maintenance.

Technical Capacities:
- Ability to perform the maintenance of electronic and mechanical equipment.
- Knowledge of PLC, microprocessors, pneumatic and hydraulic systems, DAQ, electronic instrumentation, CNC machining,
- Possess excellent interpersonal skills.
- Possess strong oral and written communication in both English and Spanish.
- Knowledge of administration of Windows, Unix, and Linux operating systemsties.
