About the Position:

The Department of Music is seeking a highly qualified Assistant/Associate Professor of Keyboard Studies. The new specialized faculty member will join the program in August of 2023. This is a nine (9) month tenure-track position .

Duties and Responsibilities:

The successful applicant will be responsible for the following:

  • Teach a full academic load per semester in in accordance with National Association of Schools of Music (NASM) and Virginia State University (VSU) standards and policies, including applied piano, chamber music coaching, and other courses as needed according to the candidate’s areas of expertise.

  • Provide leadership to the keyboard area, including oversight of keyboard studies, the piano performance curriculum, and the inventory and maintenance of instruments (including involvement with the university’s Steinway initiative).

  • Develop a robust piano studio through reputation of excellence and active recruitment efforts.

  • Maintain an active record of scholarly/creative activity, including performances that exhibit a high level of artistry and excellence.

  • Maintain active association with professional organizations in the field of study, and with organizations that facilitate connection with communities of prospective students.

  • Actively engage with the department in audience development and promotion of activities via social and other media.

  • Provide service to the department and the university through student advising, committee assignments, support for university functions, and other services as needed.

  • Maintain professional interactions with parties of interest, including prospective students and families, university personnel, representatives of external organizations, and friends of the university.

  • Coordinate with the director of the Summer Music Institute to plan choral/vocal summer music camp activities. Plan, implement, and administer summer piano camp as needed.

Minimum Qualifications
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities Required for Entry:

  • Earned doctorate in the piano performance, pedagogy, collaborative, or related. ABD candidates may also be considered.

  • Considerable experience as a performing artist (both solo and collaborative) that demonstrates creative and innovative programming, and includes mastery of canonic Western repertoire as well as repertoire outside the mainstream, including music of composers from under-represented communities.

  • Demonstrable expertise in piano pedagogy and history of teaching excellence.

  • Considerable experience with recruitment and networking within the local music education community.


Preferred Qualifications
Preferred, but Not Required:

  • Considerable experience teaching piano and piano-related courses at the collegiate level (including group piano).

  • Experience with curriculum development.
