Job Description
The Assistant Director of Planning position will provide increased capacity for throughput of facility study and small to medium space planning studies in the Planning area of Campus Planning, Design and Construction. This position reports to the Associate Director for Planning.

Qualifications
Bachelor’s degree in architecture, engineering or construction management.
8+ years of relevant project development/administration/management experience.

Job Specific Qualifications
  • Demonstrated ability to effectively communicate across levels (verbal and written), collaborate, and attention to details.
  • Strong presentation skills and strong technical and building and zoning code knowledge.
  • Proficiency with AutoCAD and REVIT 3D.
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Office, Adobe Acrobat and Photoshop.

Responsibilities
Project Development – Manage the project development process from programmatic development through conceptual design. Lead design team of consultants, or in-house Architect/Engineer team, from project inception through conceptual design. Provide guidance to the client throughout this process on design, code and zoning implications on project scope, schedule, and budget. Provide link between project development and capital projects report development, space planning, and academic affairs considerations to ensure functional improvements are appropriately paired with facilities renewal needs. Ensure all aspects of projects are prepared to enter Schematic Design and turnover to Design group.

Feasibility Studies – Responsible for the timely execution of feasibility study requests. Between 200 and 300 feasibility studies are completed annually, with an estimated project cost range of roughly $10,000 to $10,000,000. Responsible for providing guidance to departments, schools, or colleges in the development of program from which they can initiate conceptual design if needed to complete feasibility study. Project types vary widely and include classrooms, auditoria, office spaces, research/teaching laboratories, theaters and residence and dining facilities. Responsible for the review of scope, code and zoning implications, review and documentation of existing conditions, development of multiple design alternatives, review of these alternatives with clients, incorporation of client feedback, and development of multiple cost estimates. Through an iterative design and estimating process, guide clients in the decision making process.

Project Management and Construction Administration – Lead and manage contractors, consultants, vendors, and university staff through design and construction of projects as needed based on staff work levels. Coordinate all aspects of construction administration to ensure proper documentation is processed and filed accordingly. This includes requests for information, requests for proposal, change orders, field reports, testing results, and applications for payment.

Capital Projects Planning – Provide support to the Director, and Associate Director in the development, prioritization, and phasing of facility renewal work packages. Combine individual project components in the capital projects database into work packages (such as building mechanical systems, electrical systems, plumbing systems, and building envelope) that can be executed in a coordinated effort to maximize the effectiveness of facility renewal funding.
