SUMMARY

The Building Principal reports directly to the Superintendent of Schools. This professional provides leadership, direction, supervision, and support to the teachers in his/her school. This person works cooperatively with the Superintendent and other members of the district staff and the community.

QUALIFICATIONS

1. Valid Illinois Teaching License with appropriate endorsement and at least three years successful teaching experience

MAJOR DUTIES AND PERFORMANCE RESPONSIBILITIES

The Principal carries out policies of the Board of Education, which are related to area of responsibility. This person makes recommendations to the Superintendent for policy development and revision in all areas of school system administration. This person works cooperatively with administrators and district office staff to provide input on policy development, revision, and implementation.

Principals are the chief administrators of their assigned schools. The primary responsibility of theBuilding Principal is the development and improvement of instruction. A majority of thePrincipal's time shall be spent on curriculum and staff development through formal and informal activities, establishing clear lines of communication regarding school goals, accomplishments, practices and policies with parents and teachers. Building Principals are responsible for management of their school, maintenance of the facility and equipment, administration of the educational program, control of the students attending the school, management of the school's budget, communication between the school and the community and reporting criminal offenses. Principals will be evaluated on their instructional leadership ability and their ability to maintain a positive education and learning environment.

The Principal serves as an instructional leader/manager, responsible for the efficient and effective management of all programs, services, and activities at or related to the school.

School Site Management Authority and Responsibility:

1. The Principal is responsible for the supervision of all school-site leadership, management and operations.

Representative Activities1. Abatement of specific problems at school (involving low achievement, low expectations, discipline, attendance, tardiness, and truancy).

2. Consult and assist with establishing school wide goals on a quarterly basis and provide feedback as appropriate to staff and community

3. Develop a school wide discipline plan which address in school and outside behavior (bus behavior, behavior in assemblies, hallways, classrooms, cafeteria, playground restroom, etc.)

4. Monitor the implementation and management of the site-based discipline program at the school.

5. Direct, monitor, and assist teachers to ensure appropriate teacher behavioral practices.

6. Provide consultation and technical assistance to all staff.

7. Direct and use shared leadership processes with staff.

8. Coordinate and facilitate information flow throughout the school.

9. Monitor school facilities and maintenance.

10. Maintain an educational philosophy which supports a positive school climate and culture of collaboration, cooperation, equity, and inclusion.

11. Follows district policy.

Curriculum and Instruction Authority and Responsibility:

1. Monitors and identifies instructional needs at the school site. Assists and recommends programs and solutions to attend to the needs of all children.

2. Monitors classroom enrollment to ensure that classroom equity exists.

3. Review/interpret achievement data and develop a plan for continuous school improvement.

4. Assists in staff implementation of high expectations and academic benchmarks.

5. Supports teachers through classroom visitations, observations and conferences.

6. Spends at least 60% of his/her time on instruction (i.e. in the classroom, in team meeting, teaching, coaching and tutoring).

7. Develops and implements 504 plans for students and monitor all student programs.

8. Supervises and evaluates all building staff.

9. Consults with the Superintendent on the Development of master schedules and staff decisions.

10. Coordinates and implements staff development for all staff.

11. Monitors the instructional program and give feedback to appropriate staff.

12. Attends and participates in Board meetings.

Representative Activities:1. Attend and participate in Board meetings

2. Supervise and evaluate all building staff

3. Assist with the selection and retention decisions of professional staff. Consult with the

Superintendent on the Development of master schedules and staff decisions

4. Coordinate and implement staff development for all staff

Professional Development Responsibility:

1. Participates in activities, which will create improved skills, a refreshed outlook and attitude.

2. Provides recommendations to the Director of Instructional Services regarding the staff development needs of staff members.

4. Read and review current professional literature.

Human Resources Responsibility:

1. Assists the Division of Human Resources with personnel functions as related to instructional staff.2. Assists with the selection and retention decisions of professional staff.

Representative Activities:

1. Observes and evaluates assigned staff members.

Parent Communication Involvement Responsibility:

1. Encourages and supports parent and community involvement.

Representative Activities:

1. Acts as liaison for community organizations as appropriate.2. Supports training activities for parents, teachers, and staff

Evaluation Responsibility:

1. Evaluates staff as required by legal and regulatory mandates.2. Evaluates student progress as required by federal, state and local, legal and regulatory mandates.

Representative Activities:

1. Evaluates student progress resulting from participation state and local testing.2. Oversees the set-up, collection, and processing of student assessment data and accounts for the purpose of providing an efficient system and communicating information.3. Works with stakeholders to develop, implement, and monitor school improvement plans.4. Analyzes results of assessments, including considerations of program, school and demographic variables, which impact results.5. Reports results and analyses to Superintendent, central administrative staff, school principals, and others as required by federal, state and local mandates.

Finance Responsibility:

1. Manage school budget and adhere to accountability measures.

Representative Activities:

1. Keeps Director of Instructional Services and Grants up to date on the use of grant funds in the school.

2. Assures that appropriate procedures are in place to properly account for resources.3. Monitors the spending of the school budget.

Professional and Personal Renewal Responsibility:

1. Engages in personal and professional renewal in order to stay abreast of current methods, trends, and techniques.

Representative Activities:

1. Participates in local, state and/or national professional organizations.2. Attends workshops and conferences.3. Reads and reviews current professional literature.
