The University of Memphis seeks a curator/instructor of Ancient Egyptian Art & Archaeology to be appointed at the rank of assistant professor of practice. This full-time, non-tenure track position is funded by the Department of Art and the Institute of Egyptian Art & Archaeology, a Tennessee Center of Excellence. The position reports directly to the chair of the Department of Art and will work collaboratively with the director of the IEAA in accordance with the goals of the Center and the University. The accomplishments of candidates for this position must reflect their commitment to working with an inclusive student population, and their ability to contribute in meaningful ways to the diversity and intercultural academic goals of the university.
Minimum Position Qualifications
PhD in Egyptology and demonstrated experience in a curatorial position with knowledge of museum administration and collections practice. Experience teaching at the university level, mentoring, and advising students, and applying for grants. Ability to work collaboratively.

Responsibilities
Curatorship of the Collection
1. Maintains and ensures the safety of a collection of approximately 1,000 objects including artifacts and archival materials housed in the Art Museum of the University of Memphis. Updates labels, object files, and responds to inquiries about the collection. Conducts condition reports and periodic reviews of objects for conservation assessment. Coordinates with lending institutions concerning objects on loan.
2. Maintains and updates a digital database (PastPerfect) of the Egyptian collection and its associated web presence.
3. Conceptualizes and implements exhibits of the collection on and off campus in cooperation with university faculty and the professional staff of the Art Museum of the University of Memphis and other museums within and outside the Memphis community.
4. Facilitates access to the collection by students, faculty, and outside scholars for research purposes. Research and publication of the collection by the curator is also encouraged., but not required.
5. Seeks grant funding focused on the collection and exhibitions in coordination with the IEAA director and university grants officers.

Teaching
1. Teaches one course per semester. One course will be in Egyptian art and archaeology and the second course will be in museum collections.
2. Assists in the programming and internship placements related to the Museum Studies certificate and MA in Museum Practices.
3. Serves on MA thesis committees in the Department of Art and on MA and PhD committees in the Department of History as needed.

Outreach
1. Creates, coordinates, and implements innovative ideas for the engagement by the public, students, and scholars with the collection, encouraging conversations across a variety of online platforms such as the Institute’s website and social media.
2. Trains and supervises graduate students and community members as docents who provide tours of the Egyptian collection to a diverse audience.
