The Opportunity
WSDOT has an exciting and unique opportunity for an Assistant Traffic Operations Engineer in Shoreline. This position will manage Traffic Operation functions, provide internal and external coordination, develop policy guidance, and determine training needs for WSDOT’s Northwest Region (NWR). The successful candidate appointed to this unique position will serve a vital role in support of WSDOT’s mission to provide safe, reliable, and cost effective transportation options to improve communities and economic vitality.

What to Expect
Among the varied range of responsibilities held within this role, the Assistant Traffic Operations Engineer will:
  • Apply professional leadership, planning, analysis, judgment, and decision-making for complex engineering problems on outgoing work related to roadway signing, speed limit setting, and calendar actions.
  • Review Traffic Operations work for accuracy, completeness, and timeliness.
  • Coordinate work with any partnering groups inside and outside of Traffic.
  • Provide regional expertise on Traffic Operation issues to resolve complex engineering problems.
  • Review and apply technical knowledge to ensure the accuracy of speed data, speed limit database, and manage corrections for any inconsistencies between database and field signing.
  • Proactively manage, develop, and implement and communicate NWR plan to identify corridors and/or locations where speed limits need updating based on development, city requests, existing conditions, and current practice.
  • Initiate coordination internally and externally to review, evaluate, and implement speed limit changes as needed.
  • Apply technical knowledge and expertise to region pavement marking guidelines and their implementation in projects.
  • Interpret and apply the Manual on Uniform Traffic Control Devices (MUTCD), state policy, and standards of traffic operations issues.

Qualifications
To be considered for this opportunity, the following are required:
  • One (1) year of experience as Traffic Engineer 3 or equivalent experience in Traffic Operations related work.
  • Three (3) years of experience and working knowledge of traffic operations related principles and practices, and national/state guidelines (MUTCD, WAC’s, and RCWs)
  • Three (3) years of experience investigating, designing, and implementing traffic projects, programs, or initiatives.
  • Valid driver’s license

It is preferred that qualified candidates also have:
  • Working knowledge of the WSDOT Traffic Manual and/or Design Manual
  • Experience applying WSDOT performance measurement standards, applications, practices, and policies
  • One year of supervisory experience .
  • Bachelor of Science in Civil Engineering
  • Professional Engineering License in the State of Washington .
  • Professional Traffic Operations Engineer (PTOE) certification .

Important Notes
  • Washington Administrative Code (WAC) 357-16-197 mandates that all employees who work for executive cabinet agencies (which includes the Department of Transportation) must be fully vaccinated against COVID-19.   • The salary listed includes the legislative approved 5% salary premium for positions in King County.
  • In addition to base salary, employees may be entitled to other forms of compensation depending on the type, duties, or location of the position. For union-represented positions, more information on other forms of compensation can be found in the applicable Collective Bargaining Agreements. Information on other compensation types for non-represented positions can be found in Chapter 357-28 of the Washington Administrative Code.
