Job Summary
Eastern Washington University (EWU) invites applications and expressions of interest in its search for an Assistant Vice President ( AVP ) of Professional and Continuing Education ( PCE ). As the leader in higher education in eastern Washington, EWU is uniquely positioned to build a continuing and professional education unit that maximizes its mission to serve the community, industry, and corporations throughout the Inland Northwest and beyond. The AVP of PCE reports to EWU’s Provost and receives day to day direction from the Vice Provost. The successful candidate will join a collaborative and caring faculty and staff committed to diversity, equity, and inclusion, and to excellence in serving the community. Academic Affairs will fund the AVP position for the first three years, after which the PCE unit will be responsible for all position funding within the unit.
EWU PCE is currently updating its infrastructure and rebuilding its programs, providing the successful candidate with an important role in collaborating with faculty and administration to identify, develop, and deliver high-quality and innovative offerings. The AVP will identify, seek, and manage a range of programming including continuing/professional education units, industry certificates, for-credit certificate programs, community events, and online undergraduate and graduate degrees. As a self-supporting unit, the PCE provides fiscal support to campus initiatives while providing outstanding academic, professional, and community educational experiences.
The successful candidate must have the ability to develop and implement a comprehensive strategic plan that will accelerate the unit’s growth and ensure its programs align with EWU’s mission, vision, and strategic plan. The AVP will continue building PCE capacity and integration with EWU operations and academics through strategic hiring, ensuring that the growing PCE team is able to advance the plan. Through outreach, partnerships, and collaboration, the position will provide oversight to program development that meets the needs of local employers and the community.
Essential functions of the position:
  • Work with the Professional & Continuing Education Task Force and administrators to build a vision and strategic plan, and implement a plan that maximizes faculty engagement and educational impact for the eastern Washington region.
  • Manage human, financial, and physical resources. Plan, coordinate, and supervise the operations, student services, program portfolio, instructional design, budgeting, and marketing activities of the PCE unit, enhancing collaborations, effectiveness, quality, and efficiencies.
  • Develop relationships with subject-matter experts, community colleges, government agencies, and industry, corporate, and community partners in high-growth industries to ensure that programs build strategically important capabilities for the region’s workforce.
  • Seek and use data to improve PCE performance, including tracking logistical performance, creating and analyzing program metrics for continuous improvement, and using outside demand data to make informed program development decisions.

Required Qualifications
  • Graduate degree from an accredited university.
  • A minimum of five years of relevant work experience directly related to the duties described, working in academic or corporate settings and leading professional or continuing education, executive education programs, or workforce development.
  • Deep knowledge of how a university works based on experience in teaching, program development, and administration; ability to develop and oversee programs and to work with faculty and administrative leaders.
  • Strong budgeting skills with exposure to a variety of self-funded and state-funded programs and program administration.
  • Skilled at overseeing and advising program leaders regarding budgeting, programmatic nuances and marketing strategies to promote online learning offerings.
  • Strong communication, presentation, and relationship-building skills.
  • Experience managing a full-time professional team with the ability to lead, train, motivate, and mentor staff.
  • An entrepreneurial mindset and skills, and significant experience building partnerships and collaborative successful programs.
