CenterPoint Energy is looking for an Associate Engineer, Engineer to join our Engineering Planning & Design Team, located in Houston, TX.


You will have the ability to: Develop electrical models to identify design criteria violations, create design solutions and justify construction needs for Electric Operations’ overhead and underground electric distribution system. Issue construction recommendations in the form of distribution development plans and new load request for Planning sponsored projects. In addition, will prepare area studies for new distribution substations.

To be successful in this role you will:

  • Support Major Underground Engineering by analyzing new load requests, electric one-lines, schematic diagrams and plan & profiles to maintain the underground distribution system, including dedicated underground circuits and networks.
  • Uses electrical models (CYMDIST) to analyze circuit loading, identify operating issues and make reliability and operational recommendations for the distribution system.
  • Gathers information and compiles data from multiple sources (SAP, G.I.S., Key Accounts, Service Centers) to construct electrical models.
  • Prepares final development plan documents and associated reports (construction list, etc) for company intranet site (DDPviewer).
  • Performs studies to analyze and respond to New Load Request and special studies, etc.
  • Provides expertise to improve and enhance distribution planning techniques and standards.
  • Creates fault current models for Arc Flash studies.

Your background includes:

  • Requires a Bachelor of Science degree in Electrical Engineering from accredited college or university.

  • Requires a minimum of two years electric utility or power engineering experience that includes performing engineering calculations and design.

  • Able to use mathematics, including trigonometry and calculus, to complete complex engineering design calculations and relate mathematical solutions to actual utility situations.
  • Able to interpret, analyze and produce electrical models, drawings and technical documents.
  • Able to apply knowledge of electrical theory and system operations to daily decisions.
  • Able to make informed decisions, follow procedures and comply with policies based on the knowledge of the work and the services provided by CenterPoint Energy.

Physical Requirements:

  • Able to perform work indoors in an office environment and outdoors at job site/field locations.
  • Able to work with some exposure to all weather conditions; hot, dirty and/or greasy equipment, high noise levels, and uneven and overgrown terrain, when inspecting work sites in field.
  • Able to demonstrate the visual acuity to view and inspect work and job sites/field locations.
  • Able to exchange information with customers and company personnel.
  • Able to climb, stand, walk, bend, kneel and squat to perform work.
  • Able to demonstrate the manual dexterity required to operate a personal computer.
  • Able to view computer terminal/screen, sit, stand or walk for long periods of time.
  • Able to work a varied schedule that may require more than 40 hours per week to meet established deadlines and accomplish objectives.
  • Able to take notes and compose written documents.
  • Able to meet challenging deadlines and enjoy working in a dynamic, fast-paced environment.
  • Able to exert less than ten pounds of force frequently and greater than ten pounds of force occasionally to lift, carry, push, pull or otherwise move objects.
  • Able to travel to field locations for inspection, installation, investigation and occasionally to travel out of town overnight for meetings or conferences.

Working Conditions:

  • Required to remain in the service area during emergency events and assume responsibilities assigned by the Company to aide in restoration efforts.
