University Advancement (UA) supports the entire CMU community in building relationships with key constituencies and securing the financial resources the university needs to continue its ascent. As the division grows, we are seeking an associate director, Alumni and Constituent Engagement. This is an exciting opportunity if you thrive in an interesting and challenging work environment. Reporting to the executive director, Alumni and Constituent Engagement, you will develop initiatives to promote and foster high quality, life-long relationships between the University and its alumni with a focus on international alumni. You will coordinate and manage alumni volunteers, international student to alumni connections, programs, events and services. You will also manage a portfolio of alumni to engage with individually at the highest level and will be expected to travel 4-5 times per year outside of the US region. You will act as a team lead in the absence of the manager and may have supervisory/management responsibilities.
Your core responsibilities will include:
  • Managing, implementing and directing all aspects of alumni engagement within the assigned program area of International alumni.
  • Overseeing and managing marketing and communications efforts related to alumni engagement program, which may include writing for print and on-line publications.
  • Monitoring and engaging with international students/parents and alumni on various social media platforms that include but are not limited to WeChat, LINE, WhatsApp, KaKao Talk, and YouTube.
  • Serving as the Alumni and Constituent Engagement liaison to international student organizations with a focus on cultivating relationships between international students/parents and alumni.
  • Assessing results of programs, communications, etc. in order to improve impact.
  • Implementing new initiatives and programs designed to enhance the alumni engagement activities of the assigned program area of international alumni.
  • Managing a portfolio of approximately 25-40 engaged alumni and future philanthropic prospects identified through the aforementioned alumni programs and events.
  • Tracking prospect outreach and volunteer relationship building through each stage in Tartan 360 database.
  • Serving on various boards and direct committees as requested.
  • Collaborating with and serving as the liaison to departments across the university on related programs and initiatives.
  • Coordinating and managing alumni volunteers, programs, events and services.
  • Participating in presentations to university and alumni groups.
  • Potentially acting as liaison between the department and the Alumni Association, attending meetings and making recommendations.
  • Potentially identifying, recruiting and managing alumni volunteers to serve on boards, committees, and networks.
  • Supervising assigned staff, including hiring, firing, training, performance management and development.
  • Other duties as assigned.

    • articulate the case for support for the vision/mission/goals of CMU
    • pay attention to detail while managing multiple programs and budgets
    • manage difficult situations while maintaining composure
    • work independently and in small teams
    • make oral presentations for large and small groups
  • Excellent organizational, verbal and written communication skills
  • Excellent interpersonal, analytical, reasoning and problem-solving skills
You should be able to travel both domestically and internationally and be willing to work outside of normal business hours as needed. Evening and weekend work will occasionally be required; teleconferencing is required with varied times due to time zone differences. You should be able to work in a variety of environments related to indoor and outdoor university events.
Qualifications
  • A bachelor’s degree is required; master’s degree preferred with a broad knowledge of university advancement functions.
  • Five to eight years of experience within international alumni relations/development or related field; seven or more years preferred of progressive experience in events planning, volunteer management, or student affairs. Budgetary oversight experience preferred.
  • Experience living or working abroad is preferred.
  • Strong written and oral skills in Cantonese Chinese, Hindi, Japanese, Korean, or Mandarin Chinese are preferred.
  • Strong volunteer management and event planning skills.
  • Personal belief in mission, goals and objectives of private higher education.
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Office; Salesforce experience preferred.
Requirements
  • Must possess and maintain a valid driver’s license and successfully complete a driver's license verification on an annual basis. Must complete the National Safety Council Defensive Driver Training once every three years
