Position Summary Information

Summary of Position
The Associate Director oversees the community development of all eight residential neighborhoods and is responsible for overseeing Elon’s nationally recognized Living and Learning Communities (LLC) that utilize best practices in student development to create engaged environments. This position oversees the implementation, assessment, and student development and learning throughout all neighborhoods. The position also directly supervises professional live-in staff (Community Directors and Graduate Apprentices) in the department and provides secondary supervision, training, advisement, and direction for all professional staff in Residence Life.

Education Requirements
Completed master’s degree in higher education, student personnel, or related field and at least 3-5 years of progressive post-master’s experience in residence life or a related functional area in higher education.

General Purpose of Position

This position oversees the implementation, assessment, and student development and learning throughout all neighborhoods. The position also directly supervises professional staff (Community Directors and Graduate Apprentices) in the department and provides secondary supervision, training, advisement, and direction for all professional staff in Residence Life.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities
  • Residential Education
    • Coordinate the departmental residential education and community building efforts.
    • Develop and support the implementation of annual community development goals and objectives, action plans, departmental themes, neighborhood programs and operating procedures.
    • Strengthen the Residence Life community development model with anticipated learning outcomes and residential expectations for all residents.
    • Train and be a resource to guide staff in implementing a cohesive educational approach to community development.
    • Coordinate inclusion of faculty in community development within the residence halls.
    • Assess, monitor and evaluate community development effectiveness.
  • Staff Supervision & Development
    • Directly supervise Community Directors (live-in professional staff) and Graduate Apprentice (GA) and provide secondary supervision to all professional staff for community development and Living Learning Community education
  • Living Learning Community (LLC) Leadership
    • Manage the LLC budget, procurement, and expenditure processes.
    • Enhance and direct professional staff understanding of the LLC role in the residential community.
    • Coordinate and provide leadership to the Living Learning Communities (LLC) and theme housing communities through training, community development, and academic collaboration opportunities.
    • Promote leadership by creating a mission and guiding philosophy that further establishes the LLC curriculum.
    • Oversee the recruitment and advertisement of LLCs for returning and new students. Create and maintain marketing materials for LLCs.
    • Promote and sustain partnerships with academic administration and departments and LLC faculty and staff advisors
  • Departmental Leadership
    • Liaison with Student Involvement in working with the fraternity and sorority community to engage organization members in experiences that enhance value-based leadership and student success.
    • Assist the Assistant Dean/Director of Residence Life in the strategic planning of department goals, special projects, goal setting, priority completion, evaluation and assessment, and data-driven decision making
    • Provide departmental leadership in the absence of the director
  • Student Care, Response, and Follow-Up
    • Serve as a member of a Student Life Care and Response Team, which includes serving in a rotational on-call emergency response role as Senior Administrator-on-Call staff.
    • Support direct reports in their follow-up with ongoing student situations, including coverage for neighborhood issues when staff are away.
  • Additional Responsibilities
    • Support university events, including, but not limited to: Convocations, Commencement, Family Weekend, and events related to Admissions and/or New Student Orientation
    • Serve on university, divisional, or departmental committees, task forces, and search committees
    • Other related duties as assigned by supervisor

Serve as a member of a Student Life Care and Response Team, which includes serving in a rotational on-call emergency response role. Some weekend and after hours work will be required when on-call, to support Residence Life staff, or during move-in and move out days.
