Summary

The Mechanical Systems, Externals, and Nacelles (MSEN) Engineering organization is seeking an experienced and innovative team-player to serve as the discipline manager for the Transmissions team. The Transmissions Associate Director (M6) will lead the Transmissions team and report directly to the Structures and Transmissions director. The MSEN Transmissions team provides design and analytical support for the Fan Drive Gear System and accessory gearboxes. The team often works in close cooperation with MSEN Structures. In addition, it provides design support for all main oil lubrication pumps. The selected candidate will be in a fast-paced environment, working with engineers of all experience levels on both commercial and military programs, supporting all MSEN Mechanical Systems CIPTs. The individual will lead a team of engineers through conceptual, preliminary, detail design, and field support, depending on the phase of each program. In addition, the individual will support all gear/gearbox technology advancement initiatives, working with universities and business partners.


Key Responsibilities:

  • Represent the Transmissions discipline on multiple CIPT Leadership teams.

  • Mentor team members through tasks, processes and risk management.

  • Guide designers and IPT’s to ensure task scope and engineering approach are aligned with customer intent, funding, schedule and task requirements.

  • Support initiatives aimed at increasing cooperation/collaboration and cross training with MSEN Structures.

  • Ensure teams are appropriately staffed to meet CIPT Transmissions Deliverables.

  • Provide clear communication on task priority and help team members balance other priorities.

  • Make adjustments to task assignments, as necessary, to meet customer requirements and expectations.

  • Provide clear task objectives, scope and milestones.

  • Strong leadership skills to drive organizational change using standard work, turnback tracking, and other continuous improvement tools.

  • Be a member and/or chair of reviewer quorum for product/ design reviews and associated action items as Associate Director of Transmissions.

  • Provide mentorship, primarily to the 1st level supervisors, on being able to function in a supervisory capacity, teaching & guiding leadership, management and problem & conflict resolution.

  • Be responsible for strategic management of the Transmissions Discipline Health to ready the next generation workforce.

  • Participate in proposal work, including review and negotiation of requirements.

  • Review and work with the Transmissions chief to update technical standards, procedures, techniques, etc. to ensure that approach and methods proposed by the discipline teams reflect best practices.

  • Drive a culture of mutual respect, trust and empowerment in the organization.

  • Promote and drive bureaucracy reduction in all activities.

  • Up to 10% travel.


Basic Qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s degree in Engineering with 12+ years of Engineering experience within the Aerospace, Automotive or Gas Turbine industry; OR Advanced degree with 10+ years of relevant experience.

  • U.S. Citizenship required due to government contracts.

  • Able to obtain and maintain a U.S. Government Security Clearance.


Preferred Qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s degree in Mechanical or Aerospace Engineering preferred.

  • Demonstrated technical leadership skills including leading other supervisors/managers in Engineering a positive.

  • Understanding of transmission component manufacturing processes (machining, carburization, heat treatments, finishing, etc)

  • Exceptional interpersonal skills, cultural awareness, and consistent record of collaboration, flexibility, innovation and initiative.

  • Experience with mechanical transmissions a plus (including gears, bearings, seals, supports, stack hardware, etc.)

  • Demonstrated ability to successfully plan tasks and lead teams to execute tasks on-time and within budget.

  • Proven ability to work innovatively and collaboratively with team members, suppliers, peers, and customers to overcome technical and program challenges.

  • Aptitude for technical problem and conflict resolution and relentless focus on customer satisfaction.

  • Ability to effectively communicate with all levels of the organization at PW and customer / supplier bases.

  • Active US Government Security Clearance a plus
