Job description
The Structural & Thermal-Fluids Engineering Group, Group 74, provides innovative multidisciplinary engineering solutions for underwater, ground, air, and space-based prototype systems for national security applications. Examples include the development of structural-material systems for space based imaging and laser communication terminals, thermal management for high-flux laser and RF solid-state devices, and aerodynamic designs and multifunctional materials for airborne sensors, hypersonic platforms, and unmanned aerial vehicles. Engineering solutions are developed through the utilization of appropriate technologies coupled with high-fidelity models and multidisciplinary simulations, environmental and performance characterization testing, and the utilization and development of advanced materials to optimize solutions to meet ever increasing performance, size, weight, and environmental challenges.
Position Description
Group 74 is seeking a Materials Characterization Laboratory Lead, with a background in Materials Science and Engineering and a strong focus on materials characterization testing and engineering laboratory management. The engineer would work in close collaboration with a test specialist, as well as other materials engineers across the Engineering Division and Mission Assurance Office. Responsibilities for this position include laboratory operations, maintenance, test plan support, test execution, and delivery of test reports and results to program teams.
Materials testing within the Engineering Division primarily supports Laboratory prototyping activities, ranging from initial risk reduction testing and characterization, in process quality checks, troubleshooting, and failure reviews. The candidate for this position would serve as the Engineering Division’s primary subject matter expert for materials testing for a range of materials including metals, composites, polymers, adhesives, and ceramics. There is a strong preference for candidates that have a demonstrated background with practical materials knowledge, the ability to design material test programs, and the skill to contribute across several programs concurrently.
Requirements
Experience with the following types of instruments is desired:
- Instron Universal Test Machine
- Dynamic Mechanical Analyzer
- Thermomechanical Analyzer
- Thermograviometric Analyzer
- Rehometer
- Flash Diffiusivity Analyzer
- Indentation Testing
In addition to experience with these types test instruments, experience managing a small laboratory is also desired, along with strong communication skills and organization.
