Athletic Fields Supervisor

$57,340 to $70,325

Position Summary:

Under the supervision of the Parks Maintenance Manager, this position is responsible for the day to day supervision of a crew engaged in the operation, maintenance and repair of all athletic fields and related facilities within the District parks and school sites. May be required to work weekends, evenings, holidays, and be on snow watch, as well as work shifts deviating from this position’s normal work days and/or with other work groups.

Essential Duties:

  • Ensures the safety of users of District athletic fields and keeps District liability risk at a minimum by maintaining these areas within the current safety specifications.
  • Plans, prioritizes, schedules, assigns and dispatches crews and equipment to maintain athletic fields and play courts to respective locations on a daily basis. Performs periodic inspections of all grounds to ensure proper maintenance.
  • Schedules crews as necessary for snow removal in designated locations. Also assists with the off peak maintenance and repair of machinery, equipment and facilities.
  • Trains personnel in techniques for safe and efficient operation of equipment, tools, machinery, work methods and chemical applications.
  • Handles complaints from public and co-workers pertaining to District facilities. Assess vandalism in areas including filling-out reports, phoning police, etc. Assists with special events needs such as logistics, personnel, material needs, etc.
  • Coordinates directly with Manager of Recreation, Supervisor of Sports and Athletics and the Administration Office for the schedules of fields. Failure to coordinate and properly maintain these amenities could result in a loss of District revenues.
  • Assist with preparing and monitoring the budget, manage revenues and expenditures and prepare financial reports. Prepare purchase orders, RFP’s, and invoice requests. Prepare short and long-range revenue/expenditure projections, check revenue streams, etc. Develop and implement strategies to increase usage of assigned areas.
  • Hire, train, schedule, supervise and evaluate assigned staff; provide or coordinate staff training; and work with employees to correct deficiencies.
  • Conducts bidding and purchasing of materials, supplies and services necessary to maintain athletic fields and other District facilities, including working with vendors to ensure proper delivery and quality.
  • Assists the Parks Maintenance Manager in the preparation of division goals and objectives. Schedules and assist with work orders from other departments.
  • Develop and maintain relationships with District employees, vendors, and various outside user groups to coordinate their programs and special events.
  • Assist in preparing, enforcing, maintaining and modifying policies and procedures manuals; conduct periodic staff meetings to provide and gather information, answer questions and respond to complaints and concerns, both internally and externally.
  • Conducts periodic observations and documentation involving decisions on the removal, renovation, repair or new design of all athletic fields and play courts.
  • Makes periodic inspections and initiates proper maintenance activities including fences, backstops, play courts, tennis courts and weed control efforts.
  • Completes personal timecard, daily activity reports and records as required. Attends meetings on safety, grounds, pesticides, capital construction, etc.
  • Must have the ability to read and understand irrigation blueprints.
  • Conducts and documents safety training of assigned staff.
  • Keeps accurate records of daily activities and provides lists of materials for cost tracking. Responsible for providing accurate information for preparing purchase orders.
  • Maintains and cares for assigned hand tools and equipment including trenchers, pickup truck, trailer, compressor, etc. Maintains and routinely inventories parts and materials used while performing maintenance duties.
  • Exercises good judgment and proper safety precautions and practices at all times.
  • In the absence of the Manager, may be asked to assume his duties and responsibilities.
  • Responds to emergency callbacks on a 24-hour basis.
  • Assist as needed with the installation of new irrigation systems and the extension of existing systems.
  • Attend and participate in staff meetings, trainings, and orientations.
  • Attend work on a regular, reliable and punctual basis.

Education and/or Experience:

  • Must be eighteen (18) years of age with a high school degree or equivalent.
  • A minimum of four (4) years of Parks Maintenance including the knowledge, methods, materials and equipment used in the care and maintenance of parks, athletic fields, play courts, and tennis courts, including welding, fabrication and proper use of chemicals and their applications.
  • Supervisory experience required.
  • A combination of experience and education may be considered.

Licenses, Certifications, and Other Requirements:

  • Colorado Pesticide Applicator's License as a Certified Operator or Qualified Supervisor in the Turf and industrial & Right-of-Way categories or the ability to obtain within one (1) year from the date of hire.
  • Must have a valid Colorado Driver License and a good driving record, or the ability to obtain upon hire.

Necessary Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:

  • Ability to effectively manage and prioritize situations and goals to maximize available resources and problem solving skills in order to analyze complex problems and implement appropriate corrective actions.
  • Skilled in the use of maintenance equipment.
  • Ability to operate or receive training on various types of maintenance and construction equipment and willing and able to learn and then perform specific maintenance tasks in an efficient manner.
  • Ability to read and understand blueprints and instructional materials.
  • Must be highly motivated and take direction well with excellent interpersonal and communication skills, both written and verbally.
  • Ability to work independently and with a team in a fast-paced and high volume environment with emphasis on accuracy and timeliness.
  • Ability to provide outstanding customer service and get along with coworkers, patrons, and supervisors and interact with employees and vendors in a professional manner.

Material and Equipment Used:

Mower, trimmer, athletic field striper, various hand tools, tractor and implements, gas torch, electronic equipment, locating equipment, motor vehicle, infield dragging equipment, personal computer and other standard office equipment. This position regularly drives a District vehicle during the course of daily work.

Working Environment:

This position requires work in a variety of settings including working indoors and frequently outdoors, daytime and night-time including in dark areas, subject to variable weather conditions, ecosystems, and landscape. Outdoor working environments can be wet, humid, and extreme in temperature variations. Regularly exposed to loud noises, dust, wildlife, and chemicals.

Physical Requirements:

Stand, walk, sit, manually manipulate, reach outward, reach above shoulder, bend, and lift up to 50 pounds. May occasionally climb, crawl, squat, kneel and lift up to 100 lbs. The employee must communicate clearly and effectively, must understand and be understood. The employee must be able to see close up and at a distance with vision acuity and the ability to adjust focus allowing a broad field of vision.
