LRL-CAT operates an X-ray synchrotron beamline for protein crystallography, located at the Argonne National Laboratory in the Advanced Photon Source (APS) in Lemont, IL. LRL-CAT is responsible for the acquisition, processing, and delivery of diffraction data from macromolecular samples prepared by LRL structural biologists to be utilized in the discovery, design, and development of drugs.


Responsibilities

  • Design, procure, install, commission, and maintain beamline equipment and upgrades related to high-resolution motion stages, x-ray beam conditioning elements, sample environment elements, x-ray optics systems, high and ultra-high vacuum systems, cryogenic systems, automated sample changers, X-ray diffraction data collection detectors, and computer & network infrastructures.
  • Collaborate in all the tasks needed to prepare for the APS Upgrade, namely: installation/commissioning of new focusing mirrors, beamline equipment move/shift, X-ray beam alignment, and beamline commissioning.
  • Beamline operations: sample handling, daily optimization and X-ray beam alignment of the beamline, and macromolecular crystallographic diffraction data collection.


Basic Requirements

  • Bachelor's degree in Engineering, Physics, or a related field.
  • 5+ years of experience in working in a technical role in a synchrotron light source beamline.


Additional Skills

  • Experience in operating, maintaining, and repairing automated sample handlers typically used in Macromolecular Crystallography beamlines
  • Knowledge of machining capabilities, motor motion controls, and electronic components, as well as computers and computer networks
  • Skills in troubleshooting, diagnostics, and independent judgments in technical problem-solving
  • Ability to rapidly learn in an environment that requires multi-disciplinary skills
  • Knowledge of equipment and techniques for maintenance and diagnostics relating to synchrotron beamline operations
  • Experience in supporting and operating complex and large-scale instrumentation in a scientific user environment
  • Experience in interacting with scientific staff and beamline users
  • Experience in computer networks
  • Experience in survey and alignment equipment
  • Self-motivated
  • Demonstrated excellent communication and interpersonal skills
