The International Writing Program (IWP) seeks to hire several Zoom TAs for Between the Lines, an IWP creative writing and cultural exchange summer program for American and International High School students. Between the Lines students explore creative writing and world literature in a multicultural environment. They attend writing workshops conducted in English, in which they create and share stories and poetry with their peers. They also participate in a world literature seminar conducted in English, where they discuss works written by international and American authors, as well as attend a series of master classes and special events.
Between the Lines: Peace and the Writing Experience (July 10 – July 24) brings together young writers from Afghanistan, Bangladesh, Egypt, Ghana, India, Iraq, Jordan, Lebanon, Pakistan, South Africa, Sri Lanka, Ukraine, Zimbabwe, and the U.S. for a two-week creative writing residency. BTL: Peace and the Writing Experience is supported by the Bureau of Education and Cultural Affairs at the U.S. Department of State.
BTL Zoom TA Responsibilities:
The anticipated start date is July 8, 2023 and the end date is July 21, 2023. Duties will include the following:
- Training and knowledge of Zoom features and operations
- Pre-session meetings with staff and faculty for planning and training
- UI Working with Minors/Minors on Campus training
- Supporting BTL faculty and staff in conducting virtual writing workshops, literature seminars, special events, and special seminars
- Providing additional support to participants in staying connected through various forms of social media such as Zoom, WhatsApp, or email if their internet becomes unreliable
- Leading a session, activity, and/or participate on a panel for BTL participants
- Daily reporting to Youth Programs Coordinator and BTL Assistant on the status of all sessions and filling out incident reports, if any incidents occur with technology or participants
- Provide one piece of individual written feedback for each participant in your assigned writing workshop group-approximately 10 students
- Attend any conferences that arise with individual students and faculty, so no adult is conversing alone with any student
- Prepare and share a favorite piece of literature or of your own work, or comment on being a writer, if asked by staff or faculty to contribute in meetings
- Participate and be prepared to lead a cultural exchange activity during one of the Morning Meetings
- Join all sessions at the designated times and moderate communications as needed
- Make local recordings of workshops and seminars and upload them to OneDrive
- Commitment of up to, but not exceeding, 50-55 hours total
BTL Zoom TAs will receive $1200 for this assignment. This reflects the expectation that they will commit approximately 50 hours total over the course of the two-week session, and the training and planning as needed prior to session start. Hiring for position is contingent upon undergoing a criminal background check and working with minors training compliance.
