Job Duties:
A $2,500 hiring bonus is being offered for this position. Hiring bonuses shall only be for new hires of original employment or reemployment as defined in Human Resources Policy No. 5.0.
- $500 will be awarded in the first paycheck.
- $750 will be awarded upon completion of the six (6) month interim performance evaluation with an overall rating of “Meets Expectations”.
- $1,250 will be awarded upon completion of the employee’s one (1) year probationary period and a performance evaluation with an overall rating of “Meets Expectations”.
The City of Virginia Beach Department of Human Services is seeking to hire Certified Nurse Assistants (CNAs) or Direct Support Professionals (DSP) with experience working with adults with Intellectual Disabilities in an Intermediate Care Facility (ICF), Residential or long term care setting.
We are hiring for the following shifts:
Thurs - Sun, 9PM – 7AM
Thurs – Mon, 7AM-3PM
Thurs-Mon, 1PM-9PM
Tues-Sat, 7AM-3PM
Tues-Sat, 1PM-PM
Sun–Wed, 9PM –7AM
Duties:
- Ensure and implement that all aspects of the individuals’ plans are executed in a timely and consistent manner for 10 individuals.
- Assess accuracy of collected data and communicate need for revisions in programming.
- Assist Shift Leader and team to assess all client needs, recreational activities, outings and shift assignments for the day at the beginning of the shift.
- Complete tasks required for primary client, including maintaining fund ledgers, personal inventories, room cleaning, etc.
- Complete documentation for assigned responsibilities.
- Maintain good knowledge of medication process, to include reviewing the MAR, passing medications without errors, verification, counts, etc.
- Attend assigned medical appointments and complete medical/dental consults after appointments.
- Communicate respectfully with the direct care team(s), nursing staff, Qualified Intellectual Disabilities Professionals (QIDPs), day program staff, Legal Guardians/families/Authorized Representatives (ARs); and the general public, including medical professionals. Maintain effective, respectful communication with day program staff and team members to identify and address areas of concerns.
- Participate in the mentoring of new staff under the direction of the immediate supervisor.
- Ensure safety within the physical environment as well as food safety.
- Identify and defuse crisis situations and contact necessary program staff for reporting purposes.
- Maintain general Human Rights knowledge and identify situations which are reportable and to whom.

Minimum Requirements:
MINIMUMS: Requires a High School Diploma or GED and one (1) year of direct client care or customer service related experience. Must have a current and valid driver’s license. SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS: Must be available to work evenings, weekends, holidays, and overtime when required to meet operational needs. Alpha I Status: Positions within this class have been designated as Alpha I positions requiring employees to work during inclement weather, regardless of the City’s operational status.

Preferences:
One (1) year of direct client care or customer service related experience.
Experience supporting individuals with self-administration of medications.
Experience providing nutrition/medication via feeding tubes.
Experience implementing behavioral support plans and completing related documentation.
Experience documenting in an Electronic Health Record.
Experience supporting individuals with self-administration of medications.
Medication Administration Certification.
Special Instructions:

This position is subject to the emergency regulation issued by the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMS) requiring our Behavioral Health and Development Services staff within specific programs to be vaccinated against COVID-19. Selected candidates will be required to provide proof of vaccination during the on-boarding process. Requests for medical and religious exemptions will be accepted and reviewed by the City’s Human Resource Department divisions of Occupational Health and Employee Relations, respectively.
May be required to lift up to 20 lbs. frequently and 50 lbs. occasionally
