Position Type: FTE 1.0, 40 hours/week, temporary

Bilingual candidates are eligible for an additional $1.50 Bilingual Differential

Position Summary

The Peer Advisor will be a person with lived experience of the target population. They will assist the Prevention and Education Manager and Program Coordinator with identifying strategies for recruitment and targeting program activities to reach People Who Inject Drugs who are also Black, Indigenous, and other People of Color (BIPOC PWID). The Peer Advisor will identify and recruit clients for the Client Engagement Group and will facilitate the meetings. They schedule and coordinate the meetings, create the agendas and lead the discussion. They will use the feedback from the group to make recommendations designed to improve the program strategies .

Essential Functions and Responsibilities

Outreach and engagement with clients who identify as BIPOC PWID

Schedule and coordinate the Client Engagement Group (CEG)

Recruit clients from the target population to engage in the Client Engagement Group

Review the feedback from the group to make recommendations designed to improve the program strategies and make the CEG more accessible to the target population

Travel to Eugene, Salem, Grants Pass, Roseburg and other sites to conduct client recruitment activities and to facilitate the CEGs in each area

Outreach and engagement with clients who identify as BIPOC PWID to encourage HIV testing as well as screenings for gonorrhea and chlamydia

Conducting rapid HIV testing in both in-office and offsite settings

Other duties as assigned

Required Qualifications

1 year experience working with marginalized populations

Lived experience with target population

Knowledge of HIV, and willingness to be further trained

Experience in directly serving marginalized groups

Commitment to a client-centered, non-coercive, non-judgmental approach to direct service

Ability to create and maintain clear professional boundaries with clients

Ability to work in person and communicate with a variety of communities, partners and groups

Ability to work in street and community-based settings

Awareness of community resources for underserved groups

High level of comfort in discussing sex, sexuality, and substance use

Sex-positive attitude toward HIV/gonorrhea/chlamydia prevention

Strong street safety skills

Compliance with strict confidentiality laws and policies

Team player who is self-motivated, high-energy, enthusiastic

Valid Oregon driver’s license, driving record sufficient to be covered by agency auto insurance policy, ability to transport self and others to job-related events, meetings and locations

TB test (provided by agency)

COVID-19 Vaccine: HIV Alliance is a healthcare facility and requires all employees to be fully vaccinated for COVID-19 series.

Flexible hours required, including some evenings and weekends

Ability to pass agency criminal background check

Physical Demands

While performing the duties of this job, the employee is required


  • Repetitive use of hands such as grasping, twisting/turning of wrists, and finger dexterity necessary to perform various clerical duties, such as typing and writing.
  • Frequent use of arms such as pushing and pulling to open and close drawers and cabinets
  • Ability to sit or stand for extended periods of time at an assigned station
  • Ability to bend, stand, and reach to be able to transport clients and to occasionally lift and carry up to 25 pounds (harm reduction kits, naloxone kits, testing and education materials)
  • Continuous clarity of vision at 20 inches or less for processing of paperwork

  • Ability to work flexible hours, including early mornings, evenings, and weekends
  • Ability to work 5 days per week for a minimum of 40 hours per week
