With a whole-person approach to wellness, the Simms/Mann Center is an integral part of the exceptional oncology care at UCLA Health — bringing together the best of science and individualized integrative support. Our multidisciplinary team is committed to enhancing the physical, psychological and spiritual well-being of people touched by cancer. In order to optimize the psychological well-being of patients and their families, we provide a series of alternative therapies through a dedicated staff of psychologists, oncology social workers and other mind/body specialists. Together, they strive to support, guide and empower patients through all the phases of the cancer journey from treatment to recovery. Groups are a major resource available to our patients. Our groups are facilitated by professionals to optimize living fully after a cancer diagnosis. We have groups of all kinds for patients, family members and significant others. While all groups allow some self- expression, our groups use multiple modalities, for example sharing experiences, art therapy, meditation, and Qi Gong. Some groups function as traditional support groups while others have integrative approaches built into the structure of them. Groups provide opportunities to learn from others, to express oneself in creative forms, to develop coping strategies and to restore oneself. Many people find great value in these groups and sometimes join more than one because of the variety of experiences.

The Breath and Somatics Therapy facilitator specializes in using a variety of somatic techniques, such as restorative yoga, breathing practices, guided meditation, body tracking, gratitude practices, shaking exercises and self-compassion exercises. These practices allow the participants to be present in the moment, down regulate the nervous system, work through trauma/stress, and strengthen the mind/body connection. The breathing and mindfulness techniques taught will encourage participants to practice on their own when needed, outside of sessions. The facilitator will guide oncology patients in a way that is healing and therapeutic and will lead discussion as members share their experience with one another in weekly Zoom sessions. Healing Through Breath and Somatics is held weekly for 2 hours (time/day to be determined).
