GENERAL STATEMENT OF JOB

Under general supervision, transports clients to special care facilities or medical appointments, and/or other designated locations in a responsible and timely manner. Operates a diesel powered passenger bus and/or other passenger vehicles over prescribed fixed routes within assigned areas and time schedule. Maintains clean and well-functioning vehicles. Reports to Social Services Supervisor or designee.

Specific Duties and Responsibilities

ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS

• Uses a variety of designated Transportation vehicles, transports City residents to medical offices, special care facilities, and/or other designated locations. Picks clients up at their homes and/or other designated locations and drives them to destinations in a safe and timely manner.

• Operates a passenger bus and/or other passenger vehicles according to established routes and schedules; reports accidents, maintains records and logs on travel time, mileage, gas, purchases, and passengers served.

• Operates a passenger bus and/or other passenger vehicles for Department sponsored activities or events.

• Monitors fare collections and provides general information to passengers.

• Assists clients who have physical disabilities in getting in and out of vehicles; pushes wheelchairs when required. Offers physical assistance for physically impaired clients, such as carrying parcels.

• Maintains constant awareness of the physical well-being of passengers. Responds by utilizing 2-way radio when well- being of passengers is in question.

• Maintains positive disposition and responds to clients' requests with patience and a willingness to help.

• Assists in setting the daily transportation schedule.

• Checks vehicles to ensure they are in good working order each day. Maintains cleanliness of interior and exterior of each vehicle. Checks the Wheelchair Lift and fuels the Buses.

• Prepares paperwork necessary for proper transportation service records such as passenger, mileage and fuel logs.

• Receives, reviews, prepares and/or submits a variety of daily activity reports and transportation schedules.

• Operates a variety of equipment such as vehicles, telephone, pager, 2-way radio, wheelchairs, etc.

ADDITIONAL JOB FUNCTIONS

Performs related duties as required.

Minimum Training and Experience

Requires high school diploma or GED, and at least six months professional transportation or driving experience, or an equivalent combination of training and experience that provides the required knowledge, skills and abilities. Must possess a CDL Class B driver’s license with a passenger endorsement and Broward County chauffeur’s registration at the time of hire Must obtain CPR/First Aid certification within six months of employment. Must be able to demonstrate knowledge of traffic and highway safety rules and regulations, and have a good driving record, as per City standards.
