Duties & Responsibilities
Job Summary

The Instructor of Business will report directly to the Dean for the School of Business, IT, and Social Sciences and will provide 15 credit hours of instruction per semester with a primary teaching load in Business courses.

Essential Responsibilities
  • Faculty will teach 30 credit (load) hours split between the fall and spring semesters. This includes traditional on campus lecture courses, online courses, labs, clinical training, or other learning experiences. In some cases, faculty will have alternative load calculations approved by their school dean and the Vice President for Learning.


  • Teaching responsibilities include:
    • The development and delivery of courses, including in-person classes on campus
    • Identification of student learning outcomes
    • Design of learning experiences, e.g. lectures, projects, discussions, and reflections; selection of materials, e.g. readings, texts, problem sets; and the design of evaluative measures, e.g. quizzes, exams, writing assignments, papers, and projects.
    • Use of the college’s learning management system (Canvas) to post course information (syllabus and course guide), attendance and participation, and grades
    • Assuring that courses are accessible for all students enrolled
    • Use of the San Juan College Effective Teaching Framework


  • Faculty work collaboratively to develop appropriate curriculum for their programs, including the identification of program learning outcomes, course alignment within programs, and program-level assessment, evaluation, and revision.

  • Faculty create learning environments that are positive and course-appropriate which support student achievement and success.

  • Faculty will evaluate student learning and achievement at the course, program, and institutional level within a regular cycle of reporting and results sharing, including providing assessment information for accreditation purposes. Faculty will develop an Effective Teaching Assessment Plan annually.

  • Full-time faculty will maintain a minimum of five office hours per week during the academic year. Adjuncts will maintain one office hour per week for each class they are teaching each academic term. Online faculty will hold online office hours for the corresponding amount of time as faculty teaching on campus. Faculty will be available outside of posted office hours, as needed, to assist students and participate in college/school activities.

  • Faculty will participate in other college related assignments for up to five hours per week, per academic term, including committee work, special projects, curriculum review, etc.

  • Faculty will participate in professional development activities appropriate to their discipline and responsibilities to remain current in their disciplines and adept in their teaching roles. This may include attending professional conferences and/or participating in San Juan College sponsored on-campus or online faculty development opportunities. As part of professional development, faculty will also participate in an annual review of their work that includes goal setting and evaluation of accomplishments.

  • May supervise adjunct faculty.

  • Will be required to teach on campus. May be required to teach evenings and weekends.

  • Performs related duties.

Qualifications
Qualifications
  • Master’s degree in the discipline in which they are teaching, or a master’s degree and 18 graduate credit hours in the discipline, or equivalent experience.


  • Experience sufficient to thoroughly understand the objectives and functions of the position in order to instruct students, usually interpreted to require two to three years of related experience within the business field.
