General Description

Computer-Aided Design and Drafting (CADD) Designer with experience in civil engineering work related to the planning, design and construction of Transportation Capital Improvement Program (TCIP) projects. Job functions include preparing roadway design plans, profiles, cross sections, grading plans, quantity takeoffs, and probable construction cost estimates with the use of AutoCAD Civil 3D / CADD software. Developing specifications and bid documents, coordinating with regulatory agencies to obtain permits and engaging with project managers, support staff, utility providers, and other entities, as necessary, for timely project completion as instructed by a licensed, professional engineer.

Essential Job Functions

  • Organizes, prepares and completes construction roadway design plans with the use of AutoCAD Civil 3D software and by applying the design criteria, policies and procedures specified in the Florida Design Manual (FDM) and/or Manual of Uniform Minimum Standards for Design, Construction and Maintenance (Florida Greenbook).
  • Performs complex engineering/geometric calculations in the development of project design.
  • Develops horizontal alignments and profiles for transportation projects (i.e., roadways, sidewalks, multi-use paths, etc.), including horizontal curves and vertical curves and develops special designs for intersections and other roadway design components with minimal supervision.
  • Determines bid items, associated quantities and compiles quantity summaries.
  • Prepares specification and bid documents.
  • Develops and updates project schedules.
  • Performs Quality Control reviews of deliverables submitted by consultants, permit reviews and Local Agency Program (LAP) reviews, as required.
  • Participates at public meetings, workshops and internal staff meetings.
  • Assists in field reviews and field evaluation, data collection and customer service requests documentation.
  • Coordinates, as necessary, with project managers, support staff, utility providers, permitting agencies and other entities for the timely project completion.
  • Trains staff on AutoCAD Civil 3D software.
  • Performs related work as required.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities

  • Competency in the use of AutoCAD Civil 3D for roadway design.
  • Knowledge of concepts, terminologies, design principles and the analytical techniques that apply to transportation engineering.
  • Familiar with the FDM and Florida Greenbook standards.
  • Ability to read and interpret complex engineering plans, aerial photos and maps.
  • Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with co-workers and other County staff, consultants, engineers and citizens.
  • Ability to receive instructions and execute in an effective manner.
  • Ability to effectively use Office Suite software.
  • Skilled in planning, organizing, and managing multiple work assignments.

Minimum Requirements

PHYSICAL SKILLS: Ability to communicate effectively using verbal, written and visual communication.

EDUCATION, TRAINING AND EXPERIENCE: Graduation from an accredited college or university with an Associate degree in Computer Drafting or a related field and two (2) years' of full involvement in road design or site plan preparation using AutoCAD Civil 3D / CADD software OR graduation from high school or possession of an acceptable equivalency diploma and four (4) years' of experience in road design or site plan preparation using AutoCAD Civil 3D / CADD software.

LICENSES, CERTIFICATIONS OR REGISTRATIONS: Must possess a valid Florida driver's license.
