DESCRIPTION OF POSITION:

  • Under the supervision of the Tumor Registry Coordinator, the Tumor Registrar 1 accessions, abstracts and maintains records of all patients diagnosed and or treated for cancer by utilizing the tumor registry data system. The information in the tumor registry system is used to provide data for physicians and research studies. The Tumor Registrar 1 aides the Tumor Registry Coordinator with the analysis of data and dissemination of information within established guideline and in accordance with professional ethics. Assist the Tumor Registry Coordinator with Tumor Board, Annual Report, Quality Control and other functions as needed. Participates in performance improvement.

RESPONSIBILITIES AND DUTIES:

  • Identifies and compiles patient data from a range of relevant sources.
  • Uses reports from a variety of multiple medical facilities, pathology reports.
  • Ensure that all information from the COC required data set is included in the abstract.
  • Able to enter data into the computer through accurate use of the software program.
  • Codes site and histology accurately using ICOD-3 code book.
  • Stages cases using collaborative stage accurately.
  • Able to request additional treatment information from physician offices, other hospital as necessary.
  • Performs abstracting in a timely manner as required by COC-90% of cases abstracted within 6 months of date of 1st contact.
  • Assist Cancer Registry Coordinator and physician adviser to solve any problems with abstracting, coding, or staging.
  • Uses basic mathematical skills that enable the Records coordinator to add, subtract, multiply and divide in all units of measure using whole number, common fractions, and decimals.
  • Assist with preparation for weekly Tumor Board as necessary.

EDUCATION AND WORK EXPERIENCE

  • Certified Tumor Registrar required.
  • Associate Degree Required. Associate in Healthcare is preferred. Medical Terminology class required.
  • 2 college semesters of Anatomy and Physiology required
  • 2 years experience in hospital or clinic setting required.
  • Advanced computer skills, ability to read, write, and speak English, pleasant telephone personality, good judgment when making decisions and have advanced prioritization skills.
  • Ability to communicate effectively using a variety of electronic medical record systems. Experience with medical charts is a plus.
  • Reasoning Ability such as: Define problems, collect data, establish facts, and draw valid conclusions. Able to read and understand ratios, percent, and bar graphs.
  • Requires emotional stability and maturity; Must be adaptable to change, be decisive, and demonstrate foresight; Exhibits organizational and leadership ability.

Physical Demands/Work Environment

  • Occasionally this employee will need to be able to stay in a stationary position and be capable of moving around.
  • Will frequently need to be capable of moving 1-10 pounds.
  • May need to adjust ones positions to maintain computer and other equipment required by position.
  • Continuously needs to be able to operate and use different equipment.
  • You would continuously be using your hands and finger for positioning different equipment.
