Be a part of a world-class academic health-care system at UChicago Medicine as a Cardiac Sonographer II in the Adult Echocardiography Department.


Sign-on Bonus up to $5000


The Cardiac Sonographer II performs all aspects of echocardiographic imaging for clinical and research purposes under the general supervision of the Medical Director of the Noninvasive Cardiac Imaging Laboratory in addition to extensive responsibilities performing and teaching advanced imaging techniques to Level 1 and 2 Sonographers.


Essential Job Functions

  • Prepare patients for cardiac ultrasound examinations including reviewing indications and previous studies.

  • Perform cardiac ultrasound examinations including Transthoracic and stress studies and assist with Transesophageal studies. Perform two-dimensional, M-mode, pulsed, continuous wave, and color flow Doppler imaging.
  • Actively participates in process improvement activities.
  • Utilizes ISCV digital system to measure and send images to the server so they are available for interpretation
  • Involved in research and publications to be at the cutting edge of the field.
  • Assist in establishing and maintaining department objectives and policies
  • Provide a preliminary interpretation to the interpreting cardiologist
  • Perform and teach advanced echocardiographic imaging procedures and techniques such as 3D, automated border detection, contrast perfusion, and acoustic densitometry
  • Compile and analyze statistical data related to echocardiography studies performed in the echocardiography lab
  • Performs other duties assigned.


Required Qualifications

  • At least 10 years of experience performing cardiac ultrasound with at least 5 years of experience at a high level academic lab involved with teaching and research
  • Successful completion of an accredited training course in cardiac ultrasound or a college degree with a strong background in human anatomy and physiology
  • BLS certification and Registration by the American Registry of Diagnostic Medical Sonographers (ARDMS) or by Cardiovascular Credentialing International (CCI) and pass the registry within one year of hire
  • Current Basic Cardiac Life Support certification
  • RDCS (ARDMS)
  • RCS (CCI)
  • Proficient performing advanced echocardiographic imaging procedures and techniques such as 3D, automated border detection, contrast perfusion, and acoustic densitometry
  • Perform quantitative echocardiographic measurements for reporting
  • Demonstrates responsibility for checking orders and obtaining
  • At least one of the following:
    Presentations of oral or poster research abstracts and/or speaking at echocardiography seminars and conferences
    Co-authorship of at least 10 publications of abstracts and manuscripts
    Active participation in leadership roles with professional echocardiography organizations (e.g., American Society of Echocardiography)
