Job Responsibilities
The Certified Phlebotomy Technician supports this Departmental purpose by providing phlebotomy services to adolescent/adult/geriatric/pediatric/neonate patients. Additional functions include the timely and accurate specimen receipt, accessioning, preparation and/or processing for analysis on various body fluids, tissues, and fecal material. Functions also include answering telephones, providing specimen collection information and results, filing, record keeping, supply inventory, ordering, equipment, and general area maintenance. This position will be assigned to Hospital or Hospital Based Clinic(s) for phlebotomy/venipuncture services. Additional laboratory functions may include specimen dispatch to department and/or referral laboratories, and providing courier services (utilizing University vehicles and/or by foot)
Required Qualifications:
  • Must be a Certified Phlebotomy Technician, licensed by the State of California Department of Public Health (CDPH).
  • Must have the skills and experience to perform adult, geriatric, adolescent, pediatric and neonatal venipuncture, and neonatal skin puncture in both an inpatient and outpatient setting.
  • Knowledge of laboratory specimen handling, processing, and shipping requirements.
  • Knowledge of computer systems such as EMR, LIS, email, and Microsoft Office Suite.
  • Manual dexterity for pipetting and/or aliquoting specimens.

Preferred Qualifications:
  • Knowledge of Clinical and Anatomic Pathology specimen’s types, including blood, tissues, and body fluids.
  • Knowledge of Clinical and Anatomic Pathology policies, procedures, processes and workflows for phlebotomy and specimen processing, handling, and transport.
  • Possess effective verbal communication skills to answer questions from internal and external customers in a clear and concise manner.
  • Possess written communication skills to write clear emails, EMR messages, and reports to convey information appropriately.

Special Requirements
Must be able to work overtime as needed and rotate weekends, holidays and on-call hours per departmental staffing policies and business need.
Must be able to work variable shifts to provide 24-hour coverage.
Must be able to lift, move, and handle objects weighting up to 44 lbs.

This position may be subject to a criminal background investigation, drug screen, Live Scan fingerprinting, medical evaluation clearance, and functional capacity assessment.
