The Epidemiologist will:
Professional / Clinical
- Demonstrate behaviour consistent with their professional position.
- Maintain and promote a patient focused orientation in the delivery of service
- Participate in developing and leading the introduction of new ideas and methods according to laboratory policy
- Participate in implementing a clinical laboratory service that supports the clinical needs of our patient and clients of the laboratory.
- Participate in the implementation of a quality management programme which is patient/client centred and audited.
- Participate in training and supervising staff as required. Create and prompting healthy working relationships
- Encourage professional development of team members through self learning, formal courses and informal on the job training.
- Participate in and take appropriate responsibility for scientific, IT and research work in the assigned section.
- Participate in the consistent implementation of operational processes to the standards of best practice, while optimising use of resources.
- Keep up to date with relevant developments in the area of work
- Participate in the production of an annual laboratory report
- Lead and co-ordinate the work of scientific staff and/or support staff within the molecular Laboratory.
- Participate on Hospital and/or external committees as required
- Send all surveillance data (relating to infections and antimicrobial resistance) to the relevant institutions in Ireland/and worldwide, e.g. HPSC, ECDC, FSAI.
- Liaise with relevant institutions for the development and implementation of methods for electronic transmission of data.
- In co-operation with the Consultant Director of the laboratory, Chief Medical Scientist, and other Senior Staff, participate in method (particularly bioinformatics) development and implement new techniques to maintain and enhance the Public Health Laboratory services at the highest professional standards.
- Ensure, in co-operation with the Consultant Director of the Public Health Laboratory, and the Chief Medical Scientist, appropriate compliance with International and National Guidelines and standards of provision of Laboratory Services and actively participate in internal and external quality control and quality assurance programmes.
- Any other duties as required by the Laboratory Director.
Quality
- Ensure appropriate compliance with international and national guidelines and standards for the provision of relevant laboratory services and actively participate in internal and external quality assurance.
- Participate in the implementation of quality management programmes which are patient orientated and which measure and audit performance and client satisfaction.
- Place great emphasis on the quality of results being produced in the Microbiology Laboratory.
- Participate in the implementation and maintenance of a quality management system to ISO15189 and ISO17025 accreditation standards
Staff Management
- Participate fully as a team member, sharing knowledge and information and supporting colleagues to promote a cohesive team and the achievement of team objectives
- Promote a culture of learning by participating and assisting in continuous professional development of self and others
- Promote healthy working relationships as part of a professional, punctual and dedicated team
- Manage and supervise support staff and trainees
- Ensure that support staff are fully trained to carry out all procedures
- Facilitate open communication within the laboratory and with external stakeholders.
Health & Safety
- Implement agreed policies, procedures and safe professional practice and adhere to relevant legislation, regulations and standards
- Work in a safe manner with due care and attention to the safety of self, patient and others
- Be aware of risk management issues, identify risks and take appropriate action; report any adverse incidents or near misses
- Assist and cooperate with other staff in procedures aimed at accident prevention
- Adhere to department policies in relation to the care and safety of any equipment supplied for the fulfilment of duty
- Investigate accidents, incidents and near misses, and take the necessary corrective action
- Support, promote and actively participate in sustainable energy, water and waste initiatives to create a more sustainable, low carbon and efficient health service.
Education & Training
- Participate in mandatory training programmes
- Take responsibility for, and keep up to date with current practice by participating in continuing professional development
- Facilitate arrangements for educating and training scientific, medical personnel and others as appropriate
- Co-operate fully with the implementation of new policies, procedures, technologies and IT systems.
- The extent and speed of change in the delivery of health care is such that adaptability is essential in this position. The incumbent will be required to maintain and enhance their professional knowledge, skills and aptitudes necessary to respond to a changing environment.
