Annual training is required by the Department of Education for all personnel who have been designated as a Campus Security Authority.

Chief Objective of Position
The Chief Information Officer (CIO) serves as a strategic partner to leadership in meeting and anticipating the technology needs of students, faculty, and staff in a manner that positions Christopher Newport to be a leading liberal arts university.

Work Tasks
  • Operate strategically in the use of technology in teaching, learning, and operations with a commitment to university-wide cost-effective innovation and transformational results.
  • Collaborate with diverse constituent groups, including university departments, Commonwealth agencies, and partner universities to identify and implement university-wide technology and service solutions to shared technology challenges and opportunities.
  • Work with university leaders to advance change when needed.
  • Define and reinforce departmental culture, in addition to recruiting, managing, and developing employees within the Information Technology Services department.
  • Maintain accountability for the overall availability, efficiency, integrity, and security of the University’s information and infrastructure; monitor service level agreements, ensuring requirements are met or exceeded.
  • Provide effective, scalable, and sustainable operational support for all University-wide information technology resources.
  • Maintain a high level of knowledge of multiple areas of IT specialty, including both current and emerging technologies within the specialty areas; attend technology conferences and seminars when relevant to the current work specialty area.
  • Maintain compliance in accordance with Virginia Information Technology Association (VITA) cybersecurity standards and industry-standard best practices.
  • Champion the university’s technology governance processes and manage the associated technology project portfolio.
  • Direct the development and implementation of best practices and standards in the process, design, documentation, architecture, and operations of all university information systems and services.
  • Establish and maintain effective relationships with vendors to support the university.
  • Develop and maintain positive and professional customer service and/or relations within the office/department and with all constituencies to include students, faculty, staff, guests, and employees; demonstrate a positive and professional attitude and treat everyone with dignity and respect.
  • Develops a customer service approach to more effectively promote the “students first” initiative ensuring that all constituents are served in a fast, friendly, efficient and effective manner.
  • Develop and maintain very positive and professional customer service and/or relations within the office/department and with all constituencies to include students, faculty, staff, guests, and employees. Demonstrate a positive and professional attitude and treat everyone with dignity and respect. Fully support the “Student’s First” value at CNU and routinely goes the extra mile in providing service.
  • Review and Communicate safety issues and set goals to ensure a safe and healthy workplace and a reduction in work-related absences. Any violation of safety rules are addressed promptly.
  • Follow workplace safety regulations and adhere to applicable standards, processes, and programs established for your position.
  • Report unsafe work conditions to your supervisor.
  • Immediately report work-related incidents to your supervisor and participate in accident investigation requests.
  • Promote a safe and healthy work environment by ensuring the implementation of safety regulations and applicable standards, processes, and programs established for employees under your supervision.
  • Ensure employees under your supervision are trained in safety standards and procedures for their positions.
  • Report work-related incidents within 24 hours according to the procedures established by the university, state and federal guidelines.
  • This position is a sensitive position and directly responsible for the health, safety and welfare of the general populace, or protection of critical infrastructures and requires a criminal background check including fingerprinting.
  • This position is designated as a “responsible employee” who has the authority to redress sexual violence, who has the duty to report incidents of sexual violence or other student misconduct, or who a student could reasonably believe has this authority or duty.

  • The ability to work collaboratively with university leaders and the ability to advance change when needed.
  • Strong technical knowledge in a variety of technical disciplines and previous experience successfully managing technical teams.
  • Ability to establish and maintain effective relationships with vendors and to support the university needs
  • Effective written, verbal, and presentation communication skills aligned with the different needs of multiple audiences.


Knowledge, Skills, Abilities (KSA's) preferred
Knowledge of a variety of enterprise technologies, including products from Apple, Ellucian, Google, Microsoft, and Oracle.

Required Education
Master’s Degree or a Bachelor’s Degree and experience that equates to an advanced degree.


Preferred Education
Master’s Degree in an area related to computer science, information systems, or information technology management.

Additional course work in information technology. Possess or working toward the following certifications: CompTIA (A+, Network+, Security+), Dell, HP, Apple, Project Management Professional (PMP), Certified Information Systems Security Professional (CISSP)

Experience Required


  • Senior-level experience in managing multiple IT functions, including security, personnel, budgets, business services, communications, and strategic planning.
  • Experience leading teams in a complex information systems environment.
  • Experience researching, planning, and implementing major information systems projects and services.
  • Working experience in the operation, maintenance, and installation of major information systems, including network infrastructure, enterprise systems, desktop support, online learning, and classroom technology.
  • Experience managing complex projects while setting appropriate expectations for resource needs and project timelines.
  • Experience in leading organizational change.



Experience Preferred
  • Experience working at a higher education institution.
  • Experience with major project implementations, including ERP implementation.
  • Experience in recruiting, developing, and retaining a team.
