The Superintendent position is one of two primary roles in the project, the other being the Project Manager. The relationship between these two individuals is the primary ingredient to the success of the project. The superintendent’s role is one of leader, coach, negotiator and arbitrator. The leadership displayed by this individual is critical to the project’s performance. The Superintendent is responsibility for insuring that employees and subcontractors are performing in accordance with required safety procedures, processes and policies. Typically, this role is has mandatory travel expectations within the designated region with a minimum of 50% overnight travel expected for this position. There may also, be occasional local day travel.
Responsibilities
- Oversee, manage and document all day-to-day job site activities including OSHA safety compliance.
- Direct field personnel according to the project plan and Vortex Companies supervisory principles.
- Communicate issues, events, performance and progress daily to the Project Manager.
- Report any problems promptly to the Project Manager to facilitate the most cost-effective solutions.
- Establish effective working relationships with clients and Vortex Companies crew members.
- Request advice and assistance from the General Superintendent/Operations Manager on matters pertaining to materials, sequencing, scheduling and personnel.
- Attend all Project Start-Up/Turnover Meeting, mobilization and project coordination meetings, attend/chair weekly foreman and safety meetings.
- Identify pre-mobilization activities in conjunction with the Operations Manager, General Superintendent, and the Project Manager.
- Develop start-up schedule with Project Manager and send it to the Operations Manager and General Superintendent for review.
- Recognize the importance of participating in training program by contributing both in class and as a SME (Subject Matter Expert).
- Insure that as-built working drawings are maintained as well as the current drawing log and revision log, communicating this to the subcontractors.
- Assist in formulating and implementing construction schedules in the field.
- Establish and implement the Project Baseline Schedule based on the project contracts and subcontractor input, taking into account any elements that might impact the schedule.
- Maintain the schedule and ensure that work performed is consistent with the contract and will meet or exceed client expectations.
- Update Project Schedule weekly/monthly as needed.
- Provide progress report with the look ahead of schedule to the Project Manager and the field staff.
- Insure that all subcontractors participate in a safety pre-construction meeting prior to starting work on the project.
- Insure that all subcontractors have a full set of MSD sheets on the project, as well as their site-specific safety plan and current insurance certificate.
- Review the project daily to ensure that all activities are being performed in accordance with all OSHA and governing requirements and the project site specific safety plan.
- Insure that all pertinent benchmarks for the project are established and inserted into the baseline schedule.
- Insure that all 1st delivery inspections and Benchmark inspections occur per the baseline schedule so as not to impact the progression of the subsequent work.
- Insure that the inspections are approved, documented and communicated to the project team.
- Manage site pre-construction including pre-construction survey, job site utilization and staging plans.
- Mobilize the field office and maintains the job site to Vortex Companies standards.
- Organize documentation of the job site for easy access and review.
- Manage subcontractor performance to quality and ethical standards.
- Work with Project Manager to identify and resolve personnel issues and construction process revisions.
- Manage all phases of the construction process including documenting and reporting site activities and progress, manage excavations and assist with Job Site Utilization Plan.
- Manage subcontractor closeout, transfer of utilities, owner training, work list and punch list.
- Strive to create synergy and a teamwork atmosphere on the project.
- Lead by example by establishing the work ethic guidelines for the entire team and therefore establishes the boundaries and expectations.
- Take action immediately when personal conflicts emerge among the team.

Qualifications
- Proven experience as a foreman and/ or superintendent (5 years)
- High School Diploma/GED Required. Must be 18 years of age.
- Hold a valid Driver’s License
- In-depth knowledge of construction procedures, equipment and OSHA guidelines
- Understanding of pipelining rehabilitation industry
- Ability to produce accurate daily reports
- Ability to read drawings, plans and blueprints
- Excellent organizational and leadership skills
- Aptitude in math Currently holds or able to complete OSHA10 and Confined Space Requirements
- Must be able to pass pre-employment drug test, D.O.T. physical and driver’s license check for past 36 months without any suspensions or major traffic violations (D.O.T. requirements).
- Ability to work overtime and out of town.
- Ability to perform physically demanding tasks and lift over 50 lbs.
- First Aid, CPR, confined space entry and competent person training.
- NASCO PACP, MACP, LACP, certified.
