About Alaska Institute for Justice: The Alaska Institute for Justice is a non-profit organization headquartered in Anchorage, Alaska. Our mission is to protect the human rights of Alaskans. The Alaska Institute for Justice includes three programs: Alaska Immigration Justice Project dedicated to providing legal representation to Alaska’s immigrant and refugee communities; Language Interpreter Center dedicated to training bilingual Alaskans to work as interpreters and provide an interpreter referral service; and Research and Policy Institute focused on social and climate justice issues. About the Research and Policy Institute: The Research and Policy Institute includes a small team of people dedicated to using social and climate justice to inform public policy at the local, national and international level.

About the Position: The successful candidate plays a critical role in working with AIJ’s Climate Justice Tribal Liaison Director to lead AIJ’s effort to forge meaningful, sustainable relationships with Alaska Native communities to advocate for climate justice. The successful candidate will work with tribal communities to elevate Alaska Native voices, values, and priorities through communitybased environmental monitoring of permafrost thaw and flooding and development of climate justice policy. This is an excellent role for a person who is passionate about justice, equity and decolonizing the systems that are responsible for the climate crisis.

This position has both external and internal-facing leadership responsibilities. Externally, the successful candidate will work with AIJ’s Climate Justice Tribal Liaison Director to represent the Alaska Institute for Justice as liaison to Alaska Native communities, and state and federal government agencies and international working groups. The successful candidate must possess the ability to effectively work and advocate with Alaska Native communities. Internally, the candidate will work with AIJ’s Climate Justice Tribal Liaison Director on climate justice with Alaska Native communities, such as implementing community-based environmental monitoring and co-developing climate justice advocacy strategies with Alaska Native communities.

Position Required Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree in ethnic studies, Alaska Native studies, Alaska Native governance, environmental studies, social psychology, or a related field that includes coursework and/or experience communicating and working with Alaska Native communities.
  • Strong written and oral communication skills.
  • Ability to build lasting relationships.
  • Strong knowledge of Alaska Native policy, cultures, histories and government relations, including concepts of sovereignty and self-determination.
  • Minimum two years of experience working with Alaska Native communities.
  • Ability to communicate across cultural lines to include interpretation of policy between tribal, federal and Alaska state governments.
  • Able to work independently, collaboratively and creatively to find solutions to challenges.
  • Experience and commitment to diversity, equity, inclusion, and justice.
  • Strong interest in coordinating policy activities with Arctic Indigenous peoples.
  • Facilitate meetings with Alaska Native communities.
  • Draft reports.
