The Department of Reading and Elementary Education at the University of North Carolina at Charlotte invites applications for a Clinical Assistant Professor/Lecturer, non-tenure track position. The programs include a Bachelor of Arts program in Elementary Education, Master’s Programs in both Elementary Education and Reading Education, and work with the Ph.D. program in Curriculum and Instruction. This is a nine-month, non-tenure track/non-tenure eligible faculty position.

Description of Work

Thus, the Job Responsibilities and Essential Functions for Non-Tenure Track Faculty should be interpreted in the context of the related departmental and collegiate teaching goals.

Teaching – Faculty responsibilities and essential functions with respect to teaching may include but are not limited to: subject matter competence, course design, course presentation, and grading student work.



Essential Duties and Responsibilities
Teach undergraduate courses in the initial licensure programs offered by the Department of Reading and Elementary Education, including the Bachelor of Arts in Elementary Education and Graduate Certificate in Elementary Education programs. Primary teaching responsibilities will include courses focused on instructional design, assessment, including differentiating instruction, and managing and maintaining effective learning environments. A teaching load of 4-4 (4 courses in each of the fall and spring semesters) is expected. In addition to teaching courses, clinical faculty are expected to engage in service to practitioners in the field. Serve on Department, College, and University Committees that contribute to the Strategic Plan and mission of the Cato College of Education and the University.

Minimum Experience/Education

UNC Charlotte gives primary consideration to the earned masters and/or terminal degree in the teaching discipline or a related discipline.



Preferred Education, Skills and Experience
For consideration at the level of Clinical Assistant Professor, the applicant must have an earned doctorate (or earned doctorate by August 15, 2023) in Elementary Education or Curriculum and Instruction or a closely related field from an accredited university, and eligibility for licensure in elementary education in North Carolina. We seek faculty colleagues with a demonstrated commitment to and experience with working with diverse student populations to join a high-achieving, productive, and dynamic College that is on the rise as a national leader in educational equity, excellence, and engagement. Candidates should have a required minimum of two years of successful elementary public school teaching experience.

The following qualifications are desirable: demonstrated excellence in teaching undergraduate courses in some of the following areas: designing and implementing assessments, data-driven and data-based instruction, managing and maintaining effective learning environments, designing units of instruction, and differentiating instruction; evidence of collaboration with colleagues in the design and refinement of undergraduate education courses, evidence of teaching and supporting teacher candidates with the edTPA literacy portfolio, successfully preparing teacher candidates to excel in all schools; providing teacher candidates with feedback on videos of their teaching; professional presentations at state or national conferences; conducting research and writing for scholarly publications.
