Position Summary:
An Acquired Brain Injury (ABI) is a term given to any injury to the brain sustained during a person’s lifetime occurring as a result of:
  • Traumatic Brain Injury (TBI)
  • Stroke
  • Brain Haemorrhage
  • Brain Surgery
  • Brain Tumour
  • Infection
The focus of this CNS role will be centred on the care needs of patients who have sustained a traumatic brain injury or head injury as well as the needs of the patient’s family.

ABI affects a large number of people throughout Ireland on a yearly basis. Figures from Headway Ireland reveal that more than 10,000 people sustain head injuries annually. Beaumont Hospital created the ABI CNS post 2005 to meet the complex needs of this client group from an acute perspective.

Purpose of the Post:
  • To improve and enhance the care of patients with TBI and their families by developing services in relation to ABI and to assist overall in optimising quality and continuity of care.
  • To ensure a seamless service for adult patients who have been diagnosed with ABI with a specific focus on those patients with TBI.
  • To play a pivotal role as part of the multidisciplinary team. This will involve liaison with other professionals involved in ABI patient care within Beaumont as well as regional referral hospitals, National Rehabilitation Hospital, other hospitals and organisations as appropriate and relevant community services.
  • To act as a manager, clinical consultant, educator, researcher and auditor in relation to matters relevant to ABI.
  • Maintain the telephone link for patients and families following discharge or transfer from Beaumont Hospital.
  • In it envisaged, that due to the specified purpose contract aspect of this role, that the successful candidate will closely engage with key stakeholders to identify appropriate and achievable objectives to be completed within a reasonable timeframe.
  • Review patients post discharge or transfer from Beaumont Hospital in the ABI nurse led clinic and ensure appropriate follow on referrals are in place.
  • Maintain a database for patients with TBI and liaise with the audit and research nursing team to ensure adequate data capture.
  • Represent the ABI nurse service at relevant local, national, and international committees.
  • Provide teaching and education on TBI locally, nationally, and internationally.
Responsibilities:
Clinical Focus
  • Counsel and support newly diagnosed patients and their families and explain implications of this diagnosis.
  • Provide up to date information on TBI to patients and their families.
  • Provide information, written and verbal, as appropriate regarding diagnosis, rehabilitation and community and support services.
  • Promote and influence patient/carer independence through relevant teaching and support.
  • Co-ordinate an education programme for family centred care for patients and their families.
  • Liaise with visiting consultants from the National Rehabilitation Hospital. Part of the responsibility of this role will be to ensure that there is timely referral to this hospital.
  • Provide a phone link for patients and families following discharge or transfer from Beaumont Hospital.
  • To provide clinical expertise, leadership and act as a resource for patients, families, staff and community services.
  • Participate in weekly multidisciplinary rehabilitation/discharge planning meetings.
  • Liaise with voluntary organisations or other relevant support groups and participate in meetings as appropriate.
  • To review patients in the ABI nurse-led clinic and to ensure that appropriate referrals have been facilitated.
  • Ensuring an effective patient pathway is delivered through maintaining a facilitative and collaborative relationship with consultants and other specialists.
  • Liaise with directorate business manager regarding the current patient wait list for cranioplasty and identify and prioritise appropriate patients for surgical admission.
  • Will coordinate the ordering of the artificial cranioplasty plates required for surgical fitting. The post holder will engage with the admissions team to ensure plate availability for the patient’s surgical admission.

Patient/ Client Advocate
  • To act as a patient / family advocate through the application of ethical, legal and professional knowledge and skills.
  • To review and assess referred patients taking into account the patient and family’s opinions and decisions.
  • To act as a resource at expert level, regarding all aspects of TBI.
  • To communicate and negotiate on behalf of the patient and their family with the multidisciplinary team and represent the patient by including them in the decision making process.
  • Have ability to inspire a vision in others by leading and advocating on behalf of brain injury and influencing change.

Education and Training
  • Possess ability to develop personal knowledge of specific care groups, diseases and illnesses within area of speciality.
  • Develop an active teaching role for under-graduate and post-graduate nursing students and other disciplines as required.
  • Use relevant educational opportunities to maintain the highest standards of care offered to the patients with TBI.
  • Possess a good understanding and awareness of information technology applications and systems and apply them to the specialist service as appropriate.
  • To accept responsibility for personal professional development and keep up-dated about current trends and strategies in relation to management of ABI.
  • To attend conferences and study days relevant to ABI and to disseminate new information, any changes to clinical practise and how to best integrate them into patient care.
  • To maintain a personal record of professional development and discuss performance and future needs with line manager.
  • To participate actively in the personal development planning process on a regular basis.

Audit and Research
  • To participate in audit of clinical care in relation to ABI/TBI.
  • To monitor and compile accurate records and statistics in relation to patients with ABI/TBI and submit reports as necessary.
  • To implement recognised guidelines, policies and procedures in relation to ABI/TBI throughout the hospital.
  • Identify areas within the speciality relevant to nursing practise which would benefit from research.
  • Contribute to nursing research, when relevant to speciality in order to ensure patient care reaches standards of excellence.
  • Constantly critically evaluate research findings and apply to clinical practise according to international evidence based research.
  • Carry out audit of ABI/TBI Clinical Nurse Specialist Service on a regular basis.
  • Present annual report and service development plan for the following year to the Director of Nursing and to the Directorate Nurse Manager.
  • Participate in collaborative research within the clinical setting.
  • Present own research work at relevant nursing conferences.

Consultant
  • To consult with all relevant staff within the hospital regarding issues relevant to speciality and participate in multidisciplinary team meetings as required.
  • To be available as a resource and support to all health professionals within the hospital and in the wider community.
  • To be an effective communicator across all levels of service users including patients, families’, interdisciplinary colleagues both in hospital and community settings.
  • To establish and maintain a positive working relationship with management , staff (both in the hospital and externally with community colleagues), and organisations in order to optimise quality care.
  • To possess strong organisational, planning and analytical skills and have ability to adapt and prioritise workload in order to maximise outcomes.
  • To be an active member of the NeuroCent committees, focus groups, and steering groups as required.
  • To participate in local and national and international meetings regarding ABI/TBI.
  • To establish an appropriate working network with other clinical nurse specialists and incorporate local, national, and international initiatives and standards of practise as appropriate.
  • To endeavour to establish links with community and voluntary organisations as appropriate.
  • To be a member of relevant professional groups.

Selection Criteria:
Selection criteria outline the qualifications, skills, knowledge and/or experience that the successful candidate would need to demonstrate for successful discharge of the responsibilities of the post.

Mandatory Requirements:
1. Statutory Registration, Professional Qualifications, Experience, etc
(i) Be a registered nurse/midwife on the active Register of Nurses or Midwives held by An Bord Altranais agus Cnáimhseachais na hÉireann (Nursing and Midwifery Board of Ireland) or be eligible to be so registered.
And
(ii) Be registered in a Division of the register of Nurses and Midwives in which the application is being made.
Or
In exceptional circumstances, which will be assessed on a case by case basis be registered in another Division of the register of Nurses and Midwives.
And
(iii) Have successfully completed a post registration programme of study, as certified by the education provider, which verifies that the applicant has achieved a Quality and Qualifications Ireland (QQI), National Framework of Qualifications (NFQ) major academic Level 8 or higher award or can provide written evidence from the Higher Education Institute that they have achieved the number of ECTS credits equivalent to a Level 8 or higher standard, relevant to the specialist area of care – Acquired Brain Injury (See Note 1).
And
(iv) Have a minimum of 5 years post registration full time experience or an aggregate of 5 years full time experience in the division of the register in which the application is being made (taking into account (a) (ii) if relevant)
And
(v) Have a minimum of 2 years’ experience or an aggregate of 2 years full time experience in specialist area of Acquired Brain Injury Care.
And
(vi) Demonstrate evidence of continuing professional development

(b) Have the ability to practice safely and effectively fulfilling his/her professional responsibility within his/her scope of practice

2. Annual registration
  • On appointment, practitioners must maintain live annual registration on the appropriate/relevant Division of the register of Nurses and Midwives maintained by the Nursing and Midwifery Board of Ireland (Bord Altranais agus Cnáimhseachais na hÉireann) for the role.
  • Confirm annual registration with NMBI to the HSE by way of the annual Patient Safety Assurance Certificate (PSAC).

3. Health

Candidates for and any person holding the office must be fully competent and capable of undertaking the duties attached to the office and be in a state of health such as would indicate a reasonable prospect of ability to render regular and efficient service.

4. Character

Candidates for and any person holding the office must be of good character.

Note 1*

Guidance on Eligibility where a post-registration programme in Nursing/Midwifery clinical practice relevant to the specialist area, at level 8 or higher, has not been developed.
Where the applicant has achieved a formal recognised post-registration major award in Nursing/Midwifery clinical practice at level 8 or above, not in the area of specialist practice, the applicant must additionally demonstrate the following:
(i) The applicant must have successfully undertaken formal recognised post-registration clinical education and have acquired a relevant QQI award at (i) Higher Certificate or higher or (ii) provide written evidence from the Higher Education Institute that they have achieved the number of ECTS credits equivalent to a Level 8 or above, relevant to the area of specialist practice – Acquired Brain Injury.
Or
(ii) In circumstances where a QQI award or modules relevant to the area of specialist practice is not available, the applicant must demonstrate that he/she has successfully undertaken a substantial course/programme relevant to the specialist practice prior to application*, which should be either academically accredited or endorsed by a relevant professional association.
And
(iii) The candidate must demonstrate relevant and ongoing continuous professional development (CPD).

  • A management qualification.
  • Experience in management and leadership experience
  • In possession of a Masters qualification or aspiration to complete one.
