- Practices pharmacy in accordance with laws, rule and regulations of the Massachusetts Board of Registration in Pharmacy Department of Public Health, U.S. Food and Drug Administration and Drug Enforcement Administration and in accordance with established departmental policies and procedures.
- Maintains credentials in accordance with the Massachusetts Board of registration in Pharmacy.
- Leads projects related to the design, implementation, maintenance and improvement of processes and systems that promote pharmacy safety, quality and compliance in collaboration with members of the Pharmacy Department, Patient Care Services, providers, Health Care Quality and the Office of Compliance and Business Conduct.
- Evaluates and ensures departmental and organizational policy and practice compliance with applicable state and federal laws, rules and regulations, including but not limited to those of The Joint Commission (TJC), Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services (CMS), Drug Enforcement Agency (DEA), Department of Public Health (DPH) and Board of Registration in Pharmacy.
- Develops a quality and compliance dashboard and monitors activities to identify areas for improvements.
- Assists with medication safety related activities by participating in the analysis, trending and response to medication events.
- Precepts PGY1 and PGY2 pharmacy residents, pharmacy students and contributes to staff development.
- Ensures that corrective action work plans are developed, documented, communicated, implemented and effective in the mitigation of safety, quality and compliance risks. Performs other related duties as assigned.
- Standardizes and ensures compliance with medication-use processes on controlled substances (e.g., ordering, receiving, storage, distribution, administration, returns, and wasting) on a hospital-wide level and in all pertinent areas (perioperative, anesthesia, procedure, clinic, and research).
- Establishes a quality assurance program and maintains ongoing quality assurance and controlled substance surveillance programs.
- Audits and analyzes unresolved discrepancies and medication overrides and assesses compliance with current policies and procedures.
- Serves as point of contact person when loss or diversion of controlled substances is suspected.
- Coordinates the complex investigatory processes of an interdisciplinary team in investigating any suspected losses or diversion. (essential)
- Works collaboratively with other departmental leaders and staff to review events, develop corrective action plans and provide educational activities on controlled substances best practices.
- Coordinates the Controlled Substances Oversight Committee, a multidisciplinary group on controlled substances, and works towards the goals established by this committee.
- Collaborates with all relevant departments and serves as a hospital-wide diversion resource.
- Participates in multidisciplinary quality and service improvement teams as appropriate.
- Participates in meetings, serves on committees and represents the department and hospital/facility in community outreach efforts as appropriate.
- Maintains current knowledge of relevant DEA, FDA, MA Department of Health, MA Boards of Pharmacy, Nursing, and Medicine, The Joint Commission (TJC), and EPA regulations related to controlled substance management and national trends on drug diversion activities. (essential)
- Updates policies and procedures on controlled substances in the context of relevant changes to regulations from the aforementioned agencies and identified trends. (essential)

Education/Experience Required:
- PharmD or Bachelor's degree in Pharmacy required
- License Massachusetts Pharmacist required
- Employee must remain in good standing with the Massachusetts Board of Registration of Pharmacy including maintenance of registration and fees.
- 3-5 years experience in conducting drug diversion investigations, interviewing witnesses, and investigative report processing. Knowledge of controlled substances surveillance and management systems and techniques; federal and state regulatory compliance requirements; and auditing techniques.
- Experience with computer systems required, including web-based applications and some Microsoft Office applications which may include Outlook, Word, Excel, PowerPoint or Access.
Registration/Certification:
- Must be licensed in Massachusetts by the Board of Pharmacy
- Must be current with continuing education requirements for hospital pharmacists supervising sterile and non-sterile preparation.
Physical/Environmental Requirements
This job requires frequent bending, carrying, pulling, pushing, reaching, standing, stooping, walking and lifting over 10 lbs. There will be occasional need for climbing stairs, lifting in excess of 50 – 100 lbs and sitting. Constant use of hearing, sight and speech. Frequent use of smell and touch. Frequent keyboard and telephone use. Constant concentration and problem solving.
