POSITION DESCRIPTION
The Communications Specialist will operate under the direction of the Director of Communications. The main duties include, but are not limited to:
  • Represent EM in external communications matters to ensure that critical programs/projects are properly and successfully presented to key audiences.
  • Prepare a variety of external communications products, including press releases, newsletter articles, briefing materials, speeches, fact sheets, video production and social media content, among others.
  • Develop working relationships with external and internal communication and press officials in Federal, State, and local government agencies, private businesses, professional and trade organizations.
  • Assist with facilitating coordination and review of communications products within EM headquarters and within relevant DOE headquarters organizations (e.g. Office of General Counsel).
  • Analyze and identify current and future communication needs and priorities and provide significant input into the development and implementation of annual and long-range communications plans.
  • Provide strategic advice to the program director(s) and staff of assigned programs on communications strategy involving a wide range of written materials, traditional and non-traditional publications venues including professional and scientific journals, the program website and other online communications tools, and event planning and coordination.
  • Collect, assemble, and prepare information concerning the various programs, documents, and activities of the assigned program(s) and parent Program Office.
EDUCATION REQUIREMENTS
  • Bachelor’s degree, preferably in Communications/Journalism/English

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
  • Developing communications products to convey strategic goals, results, general information, and technical information to various audiences;
  • Leading high-visibility communication activities and products to raise awareness of an organization;
  • Advising organizational leadership on communications strategies aimed at delivering information to internal and external audiences;
  • Leading traditional and social media relations efforts on a local and national level; and
  • Ability to fulfill and promote L&A core values.

DESIRED QUALIFICATIONS
  • Previous experience with DOE sites/programs
  • Experience/knowledge of U.S. Congress
  • Ability to manage various and competing priorities under strict deadlines while maintaining a high level of quality and detail
  • Ability to think strategically and produce complex communications products to translate technical information for general audiences
  • Strong interpersonal skills to interact successfully with a variety of audiences and reviewers

LOCATION
Washington, DC

The EM mission is to complete the safe cleanup of the environmental legacy resulting from decades of nuclear weapons development and government-sponsored nuclear energy research. EM is responsible for managing and directing the cleanup of contaminated nuclear weapons manufacturing and testing sites across the United States. Integral to that responsibility is the need to safely disposition large volumes of nuclear waste, safeguard and prepare for disposition of nuclear materials that could be used in nuclear weapons, deactivate and decommission several thousand radiologically and chemically contaminated facilities no longer needed to support the Department of Energy's mission and remediate extensive surface and groundwater contamination.
