Health Promotion aims to challenge the health attitudes, behaviors, and perceptions of the MSU community with a data-driven approach focused on education, environmental management, and harm reduction efforts so students are able to pursue their personal and academic goals. To guide their work, the Health Promotion Department has adopted the following Inter-Association Definition of Well-Being: "We define well-being as an optimal and dynamic state that allows people to achieve their full potential"
This position will engage in innovative health promotion practices that promote and improve the health and well-being of individual students, student groups, and campus communities. This position will work with a multidisciplinary team of colleagues in the department and the broader University.
Position Specific Duties:
Program Development (50%):
Develops, implements, and evaluates a variety of initiatives, outreach, and training as part of a comprehensive health promotion mission, vision, and prevention strategy, with particular focus on alcohol and other drug-related harm on campus
Develops and conducts presentations and trainings for residence hall staff, students, and community partners on current wellbeing and harm reduction issues
Incorporates diversity, equity, and inclusion principles and practices into all health promotion efforts
Community Relations and Communication (20%)
Collaborates with key stakeholders on and off campus (i.e parents/families, coalitions, etc) to implement a comprehensive, multi-pronged, evidence-based approach
Collaborates with Communications team to develop effective communication strategies and campaigns to address alcohol and other drug related harms
Serves on health and wellbeing committees as a representative of Health Promotion
Brief Intervention and Individual Consultations (15%)
Conducts one-on-one brief interventions with students who have requested service
Utilizes motivational interviewing as a core skill set in one-on-one brief interventions and group facilitation settings
Assessment and Evaluation (15%)
Applies evidence-based theories, frameworks, and assessments according to current health research and practice
Participate in strategic needs assessment of MSU campus community to help guide the unit’s work
Assists with developing goals and measurable objectives for various programs, services, and initiatives and evaluate effectiveness
Alcohol and Other Drug policies review
Support federally mandates requirement to conduct a Drug Free Schools and Campuses Act biennial review
Unit Specific Education/Experience/Skills
Knowledge equivalent to that which normally would be acquired by completing one or two years of post-bachelor degree work such as Master's in Social Work with a concentration in behavioral or social science or Master's in Public Health or Nursing; one to three years of related and progressively more responsible or expansive work experience in public health programming, health risk appraisal, health care delivery systems or nursing; or an equivalent combination of education and experience; and may require possession of Certified Social Worker Certificate which is required by the State of Michigan or certification as a Registered Nurse.

Experience in health promotion in a higher education setting
Public speaking experience
Project management
Motivational Interviewing competency or behavior change theory
Experience coordinating the administration of assessment and/or evaluation initiatives
