Position: Controller

FLSA Status: Exempt

Reports To (Title): Chief Financial Officer

Position Status: Full-time

Prepared By: Chief Operating Officer

Schedule: alternating 7:00a – 4:00p or 8-5 (Monday – Friday)

Rate: $51,633 - $80,736

Revision Date: July 2021

Under supervision of the Chief Financial Officer, the Controller position assists with financial functions, analysis, accounting, bookkeeping functions, basic finance department tasks, and provides accounting support for other staff members as assigned by the Chief Financial Officer.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities and Expectations:

  • Planning, directing and coordinating accounting operational functions
  • Managing the accumulation and consolidation of financial data
  • Coordinating and preparing internal financial statements
  • Preparing audit work papers
  • Working with the CFO on the budget process
  • Assessing current accounting operations, offering recommendations for improvement and implementing new processes
  • Evaluating internal control systems

Payable Duties:

10% of time

  • Verify documentation and approvals.
  • Make selections for check run
  • Process year end 1099s
  • Reconcile AP to GL
  • Landlord and client payments

Oversee and assist with AP functions such as:

  • Accurate entry of invoices.
  • Process checks and ACH payments
  • Input new vendors and update vendor information.

Accounts Receivable Duties:

20% of time

  • Reconcile AR and subledgers to GL

Oversee and assist with AR functions such as:

  • Enter payments into Tenant Accounts Receivable system to record charges and process refunds.
  • Set-up direct debit for tenant payments.
  • Prepare tenant re-payment agreements.
  • Bring in re-occurring rent charges and process tenant move-outs.
  • Process security deposits and application fees.
  • Close Tenant Account Receivable month.

Bank Statement Duties:

5% of time

  • Reconcile bank statements
  • Balance bank statement to GL

Collections Duties:

10% of time

  • Communication to collect debt.
  • Record using concise, accurate reports and spreadsheets.
  • Process collections of outstanding payments.

Payroll Duties:

10% of time

  • Process payroll.
  • PERS reporting.
  • Payroll tax payments.
  • Quarterly & Annual PR reporting.

Accounting Duties:

45% of time

  • Responsible for coordinating with Maintenance Supervisor, Maintenance Technician, and Asset Managers regarding move-outs, work orders, and any other items relating to tenant charges.
  • Reconcile Balance Sheet GLs.
  • Preparing Audit work papers
  • Financial Reporting duties
  • Budget preparation
  • Maintaining records in the Fixed Asset system
  • Preparing internal invoices
  • Journal entries
  • Monitor Inventories

Other duties as assigned

Minimum Qualifications (Experience/Education):

  • Valid Montana Driver’s License or ability to obtain within 60 days of starting employment with HomeFront.
  • BS degree in accounting.
  • Strong attention to detail, accuracy, and efficiency.
  • Critical thinking and problem-solving skills
  • Demonstrated proficiency of Microsoft Excel.
  • Comprehensive understanding of accounting practices and procedures.
  • Prefer knowledge and experience with HUD regulations and accounting
  • Minimum of 5 years (prefer 10 years) of accounting experience.
  • Ability to comply with local, state, and federal financial regulations, as well as the regulations established by HomeFront.
