General Description:

The Controller reports to the SVP, CFO of The Barstow School to ensure that all Barstow external financial reports are in accordance with Generally Accepted Accounting Principles and ensures the reliability and accuracy of our financial statements and the underlying internal control structure. This position is responsible for supervising and performing the financial accounting of Barstow, along with three direct report personnel.
An ideal candidate has a strategic desire to grow their talent to eventually succeed the CFO role.
Essential Job Functions:
- Ensure the integrity and accuracy of the general ledger
- Primary interface with CPA firm for preparation of annual audit and Form 990 (tax return), and employee benefit plan audit
- Maintain fixed asset accounting records including related depreciation schedules and journal entries.
- Supervise staff accountant. Review and approve related tasks including:
- Bank account reconciliations
- Accounts payable
- Fixed assets
- Balance sheet account reconciliations
- Construction projects in process
- Investment activity
- Use of specific donor funds
- Net assets with and without donor restriction
- Supervise payroll specialist. Review and approve payroll data. Supervise all payroll reporting.
- Supervise billing specialist. Review and approve related transactions.
- Communicate with Advancement fundraising staff and reconcile monthly contributions, pledges receivable and use of donor funds
- Serve as primary cash manager, monitoring cash on hand, maximizing interest earned on cash balances
- Calculate and report year end accrual for other liabilities including paid time off, medical and dental insurance, salaries, summer school activity and other
- Allocate monthly investment earnings to each restricted fund.
- Monitor and record credit card activity on a monthly basis
- Sales tax reporting
- Monitor and report rental revenue transactions
- Track compliance with bond covenants and maintain projected compliance calculations
- Document all recurring business office procedures (i.e.: cash receipts, disbursements by check, wire, lockbox, etc.)
- Review all journal entries, produce and review financial statements
- Provide timely monthly budget vs. actual department financial statements to budget managers
- Participate in development of the annual budget
- Special projects as assigned
Minimum Qualifications:
Education:
· Bachelor’s degree or higher; CPA certification strongly preferred
Experience and skills:
- Prefer 5-7 years in a non-profit or educational setting, or relevant experience
- Proficient in use of professional technology applications and resources
- Capacity to work in both groups and independently, while simultaneously managing multiple tasks and deadlines
- Strong knowledge of Financial Edge software
- Strong knowledge of excel
- Expertise in written and verbal communications
