Southwestern University, located in Georgetown has an immediate opening for a Coordinator for Outdoor Adventures Intramural & Recreation Activities position. This position is responsible for assisting with the administration of an extensive outdoor adventure program and assists in the overall management of a comprehensive campus recreation program, which also includes intramural sports, sport clubs, fitness classes, and special events (e.g. Extended Pre-Orientation Program). This is a full-time, fully benefited, exempt position who reports to the Assistant Director for Outdoor Activities.

Primary Duties:

1) Assisting the Assistant Director to accomplish the following objectives

relative to outdoor adventure programming, student staff supervision and gear checkout:

  • Plan, coordinate, supervise, and evaluate the outdoor adventure program, which includes time in the field, while leading 10+ trips per year (including Fall/Spring Break trips).
  • Coordinate an equipment checkout service which serves campus community members and provide community members with information about trip planning and destinations.
  • Select, train, and supervise a student staff of 6-8 whose responsibilities include assisting with outdoor adventure trips, workshops/events and coordinating an equipment checkout service.
  • Manage expenditure of budgets for programming, special events, workshops, and coordinate purchase of all necessary equipment to support these programs.
  • Evaluate and revise program offerings and complete trip reports and participation records. Complete and maintain an updated equipment inventory including date of purchase, cost, vendor, location, amounts, repair, maintenance, etc.
  • Manage and continually update departmental website relating to Outdoor Adventure to conduct trip registration and allow participants to reserve outdoor equipment for checkout.
  • Develop and implement marketing strategy in conjunction with full time and student staff.
  • Assist in planning and coordinating a week-long training session for student staff each August.
  • Assist in the development of policies and procedures for emergency action plans.
  • Assist in departmental First Aid/CPR/AED training sessions.
  • Identify risk management issues within the programs in order to suggest improvements as needed.
  • Evaluate all procedures annually to ensure safety of participants.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.

2) Planning and coordination of an Extended Pre-Orientation Program (Pirate Adventures) prior to SU’s Welcome Week each August:

  • Provide administrative oversight for the Pirate Adventures program including coordinating the student registration process, developing and implementing a pre-trip facilitation guide for trip leaders, and leading communication efforts regarding essential trip information to both registered students and trip leaders.
  • Recruiting and training a core of 15-20 students to lead these excursions.

Position Requirements:

  • Bachelor’s Degree.
  • Demonstrated experience in outdoor recreation activities and outdoor trip leadership/supervision.
  • Experience in student supervision and development.
  • Demonstrated knowledge/understanding of safety and risk issues.
  • Ability to use computers for word-processing, spreadsheets, and website development.
  • Demonstrated leadership skills, including a strong work ethic.
  • Willingness to adhere to the University’s core values.
  • Possess excellent interaction and communication skills (verbal and written).
  • Have knowledge, understanding, and acceptance of cultural differences and the diversity within the campus and community.
  • Demonstrate a professional manner with all internal and external University constituencies.

  • Proven ability to perform well in stressful situations.
  • Ability and willingness to travel utilizing standard, commercial, and/or personal modes of transportation.
  • Understanding and commitment to a liberal arts education, including relating to liberal arts faculty
  • Ability to attend work consistently and maintain a regular work schedule.

Conditions of Employment:

  • Possess a Current Wilderness First Responder certification or be willing and able to obtain this certification within 6 months of hire.
  • Texas Driver’s License or ability to obtain within 30 days of hire.
  • CPR/AED/First Aid certification or ability to obtain within 30 days of hire.
  • Must possess the physical strength and endurance required to conduct the following activities: leading groups in a variety of outdoor activities, moving heavy equipment (30lbs or more) and sustaining high levels of activity (e.g. standing, walking, rowing, climbing and lifting above and below the waist) over long periods of time.
  • Ability to work variable schedule which may include early mornings or evenings, as well as weekends and nights, and the ability to attend on and off campus events.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Master’s Degree in recreation, sports management, higher education, or related field.
  • Experience working in a higher education setting.
  • Experience supervising, training and evaluating student staff.
  • Experience with current industry standards and risk management standards for outdoor activities.
  • Current member of industry associations (AORE, NIRSA, etc.).
  • Wilderness First Aid Instructor (WFA-Instructor) certification from reputable provider.
  • Industry certifications in rock climbing, paddling, and/or outdoor ethics (CWI, SPI, ACA kayak instructor and/or swift water rescue, LNT Educator, etc.).
  • First Aid/CPR/AED Instructor certified.
