The Position: The primary responsibility of this position is to coordinate programs and advising services for undergraduate students in Natural Science majors within the College of Arts & Sciences. This person will provide support and direction for up to six advisors who work with students majoring in Natural Science fields, providing advisors with support, and coordinating staff meetings.
As the advisor for students in the Natural Sciences, this person is responsible for supporting faculty mentors by offering additional consultation and being a resource for them. In addition, this position coordinates programmatic initiatives centered on welcoming new majors, explaining concentration differences, career development, and overall personal development.
This person is also a member of the Arts and Sciences Advising Services staff, serving as a liaison for one of the Natural Sciences departments and the college with new students and transfer students through orientation advising sessions. The coordinator position exists to provide comprehensive and integrated academic advising to undergraduate students, and to promote academic advising as an essential tool for academic success and a critical component of the educational experience.
This person will support students as they transition at various points throughout their academic careers at UT which include:
- Self-exploration that focuses on strengths, interests, and values,
- major and career exploration,
- identification of co-curricular, career, experience learning, and leadership opportunities to support both academic and professional development, and
- selection of major and development of an academic plan that aligns with strengths, aspirations, and abilities.
The coordinator also fosters students’ intellectual and personal development toward academic success, interprets and advises students on policies and procedures of the University and the College of Arts and Sciences, and conducts academic probation, pre-law, pre-health, and pre-teaching advising appointments.
REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS:
- Master’s degree in higher education administration, college student personnel, or other related field.
- Minimum of three years’ experience in advising or a related field at the college or university level at the time of start date.
- Excellent oral communication and writing skills.
- Demonstrated ability to successfully navigate change.
- Ability to utilize technology that supports both students and professional practice (MS Word, Excel, Student Information Systems, Degree Audits, Internet/ online resources and support).
- Administrative and organizational skills with the ability to handle simultaneous projects.
- The ability to relate effectively to students, faculty, support staff, alumni, and parents.
- Knowledge of student development theory.
- Knowledge of various approaches to academic advising.
- Understanding of college curriculum.
PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:
- Educational background in Natural Sciences or related field
- Experience in supervision or mentoring of staff
- Knowledge of Arts and Sciences curriculum
- Knowledge of UT policies and procedures
- Knowledge of UT resources and support for students
