The primary responsibility for this role is to identify and place earned media news content with news organizations across Nebraska and to research and develop news stories for audiences internal and external to University of Nebraska-Lincoln. This position plays a key part in supporting the goals of the Office of University Communication, to protect and promote the reputation and relevance of UNL, particularly among stakeholders within the state of Nebraska.

This position will work directly with Nebraska daily newspapers, broadcast and internet news sources to achieve original content highlighting the university’s statewide engagement. The position will work directly with university leaders, faculty and researchers, extension, students and other service providers to research news opportunities, develop them into stories and/or press releases and engage with communities across the state. The position will work closely and regularly with the Director of Public Affairs, other members of the University Communication team and communicators representing other university units to develop news ideas, build and execute communications plans and distribute multi-platform content that attracts state and local interest.

Bachelor’s degree in journalism, public relations, English, communication or related field. Demonstrated experience writing accurately, compellingly and concisely. Experience successfully pitching story ideas or other creative proposals. News interviewing experience. Ability to successfully pitch story ideas or other creative content. Ability to interview subjects to elicit key information and concepts. Knowledge of AP Style or similar style guide. Knowledge of how news media identify, produce and distribute information. Ability to lead, manage and participate in cooperative projects. Initiative and self-direction.

Knowledge of or experience with higher education structures, strategies and current issues. Familiarity with Nebraska political scene and current issues. Familiarity with online content management systems. Familiarity with word processing and presentation software such as Microsoft Word and PowerPoint. Familiarity with social media platforms such as Twitter, Instagram, Facebook and YouTube.
