These positions are located at New Hanover Correctional Center in Wilmington, North Carolina which houses up to 402 male offenders in a minimum custody facility.

Correctional Officer I's report to a Correctional Sergeant I*
These positions are responsible for ensuring the care, custody, and control of offenders.
- Officers must tour assigned areas which will require periodically climbing stairs; observing offenders’ activity in person and on closed-circuit monitors; identify offenders’ who have behavioral, medical, or other problems so that appropriate safety and security measures may be taken; and perform general security duties to prevent escape, disorder, rule infractions, and harm to offenders’, visitors, and staff.
- The general security duties performed by officers require them to search offenders’, visitors, cells and other areas for weapons and contraband; monitor and regulate offenders’ and staff movement; maintain and record offender counts, cell assignments, and other pertinent information; escort offenders’ within and outside the institution; use and maintain keys and other equipment; and supervise offenders’ work details. Special security duties vary by post assignment.
WORK SCHEDULE:
Employees must be able to work any shift including rotating, fixed shift or split shift. All shifts may include days, nights, weekends, holidays, and mandatory overtime as required.

The salary grade for Correctional Officer I is a NC05. State employees are encouraged to apply for positions of interest even if the salary grade is the same as, or lower than, their current position. If selected for this position, a new salary will be recalculated taking into consideration the quantity of relevant education and experience, funding availability, and internal equity. Based upon these factors, a pay increase MAY result.

Minimum Education and Experience Requirements
High School Diploma/GED from an accredited school or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
Necessary Special Qualifications: Must be eligible for certification by the North Carolina Criminal Justice Education and Training Standards Commission.

OTHER REQUIREMENTS:
1. Must be at least 20 years of age and a citizen of the United States.
2. Must be eligible for certification by the NC Criminal Justice Education and Training Standards Commission. Click HERE for specific certification requirements.
3. Must possess a valid driver's license.
4. Applicants with military experience must submit an unaltered copy of the DD-214, Report of Separation (long form) along with their application. Applicants seeking any Veteran's Preference must attach a DD-214. Applicants in the National Guard must also submit Form NGB-23A.
5. Pass Psychological testing as required by NC Criminal Justice Education and Training Standards Commission.
6. Pass Physical Examination as required by NC Criminal Justice Education and Training Standards Commission.
7. Pass Drug Screening as required by NC Criminal Justice Education and Training Standards Commission.
8. Attend and successfully complete six weeks of Basic Correctional Officer Training (BCOT) at a Training Facility. Employees shall be scheduled for BCOT during their 2nd week of employment.

Pay: $31,200.00 - $54,101.00 per year
