Texas Eye Care Network is seeking an experienced Surgical Counselor at our clinic in Corpus Christi, TX.

About the Opportunity

Acting as both an advocate and educator, the surgical counselor assists the patient with all aspects of pre-operative preparations to promote patient confidence in their medical care and to make the surgical experience as smooth as possible. The role of surgical counselor requires excellent communication and customer service skills creating opportunities for questions, conversation, and understanding. Although the surgical counselor has many responsibilities, creating an excellent patient experience is the foundation on which everything is built.

Essential duties and responsibilities

  • Understands the surgical procedures and discusses the recommendations in laymen’s terms, they are patient and understand the importance of this educational conversation.
  • Educates patient regarding surgical options as per surgeon’s recommendations. Clarify lifestyle benefits of each option.
  • When options are presented, educate the patient on the lifestyle benefits of each option allowing the patient to make an informed decision based on their lifestyle.
  • Educates the patient about costs associated with the surgery.
    • Estimated insurance payments
    • Estimated patient out-of-pocket payment (co-pay, deductibles)
    • Pricing for elective refractive procedures
    • Financing options and assist with enrolling as needed
  • Creates a calm environment in which patient is comfortable asking question to further understanding of surgeon recommendations.
  • Shows impeccable attention to detail when acting as a liaison between the office, surgical facility, and the patient.

About the Candidate

  • High school diploma or equivalent.
  • Minimum 1 year of experience in a customer service role.
  • At least 2 years of Lasik coordinator experience.
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills.
  • Capability of meeting patient surgical scheduling volumes as established by the lead technician.
  • Bilingual skills preferred: Fluent in Spanish and English.
  • Previous surgical counseling or patient education experience preferred.
